HELP.. need INFO on 80's roller engine

    a friend wants to get a roller engine.. he has a line on one...


    he wants to know what year is the BAD roller engines.. or what year is the GOOD engines to get.

    5.0 roller engine..

    i told him late 80;s but not sure the year range.. please help.. engine might be gone tomorrow..

    Anything 87-92 is the best bet. 86 has the flat tops and crap heads which cause issues with piston to valve clearances. 87-92 have forged pistons. Also, the 93-95 engines are decent too, but come with hyperpathetic pistons. Look for a grey oil pan as opposed to black. The grey pans generally mean forged slugs.

    i passed the info to him.. he said in the junkyard he went to, there was 5 roller engines from the late 80's still in cars...

    im so excited now... i want to go get one...

    Tell him to remember the 50 oz balance.
    So his 28 oz stuff will have to go.
    Also, if he has a manual tranny, he will have fab a cable or hydraulic clutch.
    The late blocks have no provision for mechanical linkage.

    I was reading some Stang restoration mags today and found a bracket for late blocks and early manual trannys. It bolts to the side of the late block using 2 existing bosses. Then it has a boss welded to it in the correct position to replicate a mounting point for stock linkage.
    The kit runs about 60 bux.

    Im pretty sure dmhines had to use one of those on his roller block for his toploader.

    Personally, I would like to try a hydraulic clutch once.
    They work so well on late model cars...
    No headaches.
