a friend wants to get a roller engine.. he has a line on one... he wants to know what year is the BAD roller engines.. or what year is the GOOD engines to get. 5.0 roller engine.. i told him late 80;s but not sure the year range.. please help.. engine might be gone tomorrow.. thanks
Anything 87-92 is the best bet. 86 has the flat tops and crap heads which cause issues with piston to valve clearances. 87-92 have forged pistons. Also, the 93-95 engines are decent too, but come with hyperpathetic pistons. Look for a grey oil pan as opposed to black. The grey pans generally mean forged slugs.
thanks i passed the info to him.. he said in the junkyard he went to, there was 5 roller engines from the late 80's still in cars... im so excited now... i want to go get one...
Tell him to remember the 50 oz balance. So his 28 oz stuff will have to go. Also, if he has a manual tranny, he will have fab a cable or hydraulic clutch. The late blocks have no provision for mechanical linkage. Dave
I was reading some Stang restoration mags today and found a bracket for late blocks and early manual trannys. It bolts to the side of the late block using 2 existing bosses. Then it has a boss welded to it in the correct position to replicate a mounting point for stock linkage. The kit runs about 60 bux. Fwiw Dave
Personally, I would like to try a hydraulic clutch once. They work so well on late model cars... No headaches. Dave
