This is a picture of a door off of a 1972 Comet I just parted out. Look......it has provisions for both type of door handles and door release handles. It has the 1970-1972 style on it, but it has all the holes and cutouts for the 1973-1977 style. Both doors have it, they are both original to the car, and it is a factory job. The only thing I can think of is that this car was built in August of 1972.....at the same time 1973's were being built. This was probably one of the last 1972's made that year. For some reason, Ford made a door with both provisions. The tooling on that had to be expensive I would think. No other 1972 I have ever seen has had this. Anybody else ever see this?
Maybe 1973-1977 doors have the ability to have 1970-1972 hardware bolted to it? Anybody know? Maybe this is an early 1973-1977 door?
I have seen it alot and since I have never parted out a 73, I believe they all are probably like that from late 72 on.
Note the door also has the later model re-enforcement "beam" in it. Bill had asked me last night about puting '70 hardware on a '74 door. If he was doing it the other way around, it wouldn't work because the '70 door doesn't have the '74 holes. This answers his question.
Mine has both... My '74 Comet GT has provisions for both door handles. My doors are original and I believe it has a build date of spring '74. Maybe it was certain assembly plants that had these. Anybody know what type handles came on the Brazillian Mavericks? Seth
