Yep, sitting here in 3rd period which is Word Processing. Got a substitute today and we're just watching some movie called O brother, where art thou? and surfing the internet. Got George Clooney and these 2 red neck dudes that broke out of prison in this movie. It's absolutely hillairious. Lots of cussing to be a DVD from the school library. Go home in 30 minutes, squeaky belt and all!
Jamie if you do go with 2 belts make sure you ask them for a matched set. They will arrive banded together as they will be length matched from the factory. First I would try the belt dressing and make sure you have the right width of belt. If you are using to narrow of a belt, it will bottom out in the pulley which will cause noise. The belts sides should be riding against the pulley not the bottom.
Thanks Allan, I didn't know that about the double belts. I will try the belt dressing this afternoon. Art, I'm on a modified schedual. Only go 3 periods a day. Last year they said I didn't do anything but socialize and dissrupt class the last 3 periods of the day, so I didn't need to be there. What can I say, after lunch I get talkitive. I definately wasn't going to complain with them about it. :evilsmile
Wow, they sure are getting "creative" in the structure of the school system, lol. Hey, I guess as long as you have enough credits to graduate, more power to the system! I'm not sure if they still do it around here, but when I was going to school, some students were able to get half days (as seniors) if they had an agreement with an employer to hire them. It was considered "on the job training" and they actually received some school credits for it. Again, not sure they are still allowing that around here. Well Jamie, have a decent afternoon, pick up that belt dressing and give it a try! Art
Yep, they still do that. Tehnically work study is what I'm doing, I just don't have to do the work part when I get out. Well I'm outa' here in 2 minutes. Talk to ya later.
The wifes 68 cougar had a dual belt pulley set on it as well (302). I would check the tightness as well as usning the dressing. if you only did it hand tight that usually isnt enough. they have on most alt brackets a hole to stick the screwdriver through and pry on it while tightening. also a little trick i picked up from my grandfather. the water pump has a hole on the outside for fluid to squirt out if the bearing starts going bad. although the bearing is supposed to be completely lubricated by the coolant, you can spray a light oil (i use tri flow) on the bearings outside and that will cause the pump to generate a little less resistance. course turining a bigger fan also adds to the strain against the belt. hope that helps
i dont have power steering either... and i dont have power brakes either one belt does it all for me as well... so i know what you mean...
There are different widths of V belts. If the one you have is too wide or too narrow, you will have much less surface contact which will cause squeeling, no matter how tight you make it. Also check all your pullies and make sure they are all for the same width belt.
The alternator is practically new. If it was the alternator, it dosen't make sense that it would only squeak when it's really cold out and only when I accelerate. Seems like it would do it all the time. The water pump is the only thing on the whole car I have never touched. It could be original for all I know. It looks rough, but I haven't had any problems with it, so I never really have paid much attention to it. I picked up a can of Prestone belt dressing at Wally World when I left school the other day. Problem solved. Sorry, but I think if you have to pry the alternator to get the belt tight enough, thats a little TO tight. I can get it more then tight enough by hand. The top of the V belt is perfectly level with the edges of either side of the pulleys. I wish the crank pulley wasn't all made together. I would put a serpentine belt and pulleys on it...
Glad the belt dressing worked, but if your water pump is old i would start planning on one of those. its just a brass bushing and wears fairly quick. its an easy fix also. not necessarily saying the alt needs to be cranked on hard, just letting you know that the slot was there. good to hear the dressing is working.
Yea, I'm not going to mess with the water pump on this engine. I have a deal with Terry Hawkins on a rebuilt transmission and a deal with Dan Hines on the 250 thats currently in his yellow '74 when we pull it out. I will be slapping those together and dropping them in over Christmas break as well as hopefully putting on some new ball joints. I'll probably replace the water pump on Dan's engine before I drop it in depending on what it looks like. I just got an email back from the guy that had my car from '84-'03. His grandma had it from '76-'84 and bought it from the original owner. He said as far as he knows the water pump is original. It's only gotta last a couple of more months, so it should be fine (knock on wood). I'll definately be paying alot more attention to detail this time around from last time I had the engine and trans out. Last time I was just in a hurry to get the trans swapped and get it back together. I cut a few corners and it came back to bite me. Live and learn...
