Specifically the Eagle cranks? I have been looking but have yet to find any specific power limits. I am looking at a 408 kit with the 4" stroke and 6.2" rods. TIA
A buddy bought a stroker kit for his 351w(393 I think)w/cast crank.The sales person told him it would live "up to a 175 shot"(NOS)and no more than 6 grand.I would check into a Scat steel crank,I think it was around $700-800 and used stock 351 rods,5.0 pistons and gives you a 393 w/standard bore.Sounded like a good deal.
I may just go for a forged kit in that case. A completely forged kit can be had for around $1700. That way I can boost it in the future if I get the urge. I want around 450hp NA, and 500+ boosted. I dont want to use stock rods as that would defeat the purpose of a high hp stroker IMHO.
I hear you on the stock rods,I was just remembering how that particular crank worked.When you order a kit,be sure to ask how it's balanced,some of the low $$ kits cost alot to balance out.
Good tip. I think the kit I am looking at is a 28oz imbalance. Are the newer motors 50oz or 28? I cant remember...
Zero balanced dampner (balancer) needed too. Balancing could be a little more $$. Check into that. I would consider what block you are going to use then pick the crank. A lot of folks say the block will break before a cast crank will. Course I went with the forged crank with a stock block because the forged crank was only a little more $$ and I wanted to get the good stuff for my internals. There's alot of varying opinion on what horsepower things can take, and it depends alot on the engine builder and how thorough you are at measuring clearances and all that. Also depends alot on the tuner. I bought all my stuff from Brian at AD Performance before he was on eBay and he was great. I recommend him.
Bingo. I've seen more split blocks than cranks. Lots more. At a minimum I'd recommend the FRPP Sportsman block for your build.
I want to keep the entire engine build around $4000, and the sportsman block would eat up a large chunk of that. I want a reliable 500hp possible platform, and I am pretty sure a stock 351w block can handle that. If going forged is overkill, I dont want to pay the extra money, but I cant find any solid HP numbers for the cast cranks, and I want this engine to be able to spin up and bounce off the rev limiter(if I ever miss a shift or something...) without having to worry about it grenading.
Mine's cast....Scat 4" stroke 3" mains, 2.100" rods. Yep, basically a low-buck built 415" windsor. No fancy stuff in there. Also have an Eagle 4340 crank, same dimensions....going into a "spare" engine. "0" balance too, so I'll need a flexplate. Won't be able to reuse my old one, unfortunately. Makes plenty of power. So far (knock on wood) it hasn't broke yet. I did break a stock cast crank though (or was it the block that let go first??). Either way, a 3.5" stock crank came out in 4 pieces LOL.
I think I am just going to go for the forged kit. Ill feel better about it when the block breaks and wipes out the whole (forged)bottom end LOL
