OK, I just purchased a 1992 lincoln 5.0 HO and AOD. everything from the radiator back to the tailshaft. wiring harness and computer, all engine accessories. I probably shouldn't be thinking this but I have my 289 with a performer RPM manifold/ 4 bbl carb setup and new distributor. Will my distibutor fit into this block or will I need a different on? ( point style ) I have never done an EFI swap and I think there is more power from carbs than EFI.. Tell me if I'm wrong.. I really don't want to work on a fuel injected car anymore. If I do the carb swap, it should be a direct bolt in; shouldn't it? with the exception of the drive shaft. next question, will the trans work without the computer???
I think your carb/manifold will work ok but the distributor gear might not like the cam gear if it's a steel roller cam.
Tom, the distributor will need the steel cam gear. With the lincoln motor you will need a different timing cover for the fuel pump, and the front sump oil pan with the dipstick in the timing cover (if you want to check the oil). As far as the AOD goes I'm not sure!
Anything that looks different on the 5.0 replace with parts from the 289 .. oil pan, timing chain cover, etc. You must use the 5.0 damper and flexplate. You'll need a steel or brass gear (steel is better) on your dizzy or the roller cam will quickly destroy the cast dizzy gear used on a flat-tappet cam.
Thanks for the info. I can't wait to get started. It seems like I just put the car together. Oh, wait, I did. I learned alot from running the car; what else needs fixed, how bad my painting is, etc. lol
Is a 92 5.0 a roller engine? What about the tranny? Is a 92 an AOD or one of the computor controlled trannies. It was right in there when they changed was'nt it? I guess if there is a button on the dash or gear shift for the OD it's the later. clint
update Still waiting on delivery of the motor/trans. but the guy said the trans is the AOD. He says he is bringing the wiring harness and whole shebang.. Not that I need it. The 92 is suppose to be roller, guess I'll find out when I rip the EFI off. My 289 is losing water somewhere.. really slow but it's going.. hope it's the radiator and not a cracked head.. Now I need to find the right steel gear for the dizzy. Found one ot O'reilly but they wanted about $80.00 for it..WOW Will just buy a new distibutor before paying that much. Mallory is really proud of that part.
tomeriker; I had a slow fluid loss in my engine when I first put it in. It would empty the rad in about two hours of constant running. It was a bad head gasket. Take the rad cap off and see if you have bubbles in the fluid. Also, get an exhause gas analyzer from an emission shop, put it over the rad and see if it reads exhaust gas. Also, take a compression reading. Saved me from buying a new engine. Good luck!
steel gear Is it possible to use the steel gear off of the TFI dizzy on the 92 motor? I realize the electronics of the TFI are different but the physical dimensions of the gear may be the same as the gear on your old dizzy.
I'm gettin Dizzy>>> lol The 92 gear has a larger inside diameter so I don't think it will work on my dizzy. I was going to use a pertronix in my dist. but now I think I will just get a new one that fits...80. for pertronix, 80 for gear. I found a complete setup for around 200. that is HEI..
Have you ever considered using the distributor from the 92 without the computer? Atleast until you get the distributor you want,,,, I have made the EEIV distributor run without the computer,,, It is basicly running it like an electronic ign,, hot wire, coil pick up, and a ground thru the block, The drawback is that the timing stays put at what ever you set the base timing to, since the computer runs the timing control, you could replace it and hook up a MSD timing control,,, that would give you timing changes. I did that when I converted my 88 tbird roller 5.0 to a carb. Chad
problem solved after searching the forum I found a few resources that helped. (1985 ford mustang 5.0 HO 4bbl. stickshift) motorcraft replacement dizzy $45. ignition box $18. cap and rotor $12. now I just have to make a simple harness and all will be right in the world. NOTE: make sure its for the stickshift, the auto one is the computer controlled one..This dizzy already has the steel gear on it too..
