On my '76 Comet, the backup light bulbs are 1076.

The 1076 is indeed a bulb for the back up lights on a Comet.

    ON the Maverick's it's a 1157 for the stop/turn ans a 1156 for the backup.

I never new this before (never looked) because it's always been a 1156 for the back up light on the mav's

Well a back up light was out on the Comet, I put in a 1156.

This was about a month ago.

Then one day the radio goes out (damn installer) must be a lose wire and the fuse blew.

New fuse, radio works,(don't kick the wires under the dash)

Works OK for acouple of weeks and goes out again.

I look at the diagram show the window washer pump, radio and backup lights on the same fuse! Hmmmmmmm!

Turns out that the 1156 and 1076 blub have the same type of base (pins are opposite each other)

There both a single filament bulb

However the 1076 has a double contact on the bottom where as the 1156 has just one.

When you install a 1156 into the socket it connects the two contacts and you have a perfect ground. It would blow the fuse ony when I was in reverse for a few sec's , it would not blow it just passing reverse.

So for those of you with Comets get a spare 1076 (no they do not keep them on the shelf) you have to order it. Go figure.

    That's my story!

that kinda stinks, could you switch to the 1156 styled socket in a pinch? not that id suggest doing it unless necessary.

I found an eBay seller who had a whole case of them. I grabbed a lifetime supply for myself. Incidentally, I also have a '65 T-bird. I noticed it also uses 1156 for its backup lights. You may be able to find this bulb more conveniently from one of the classic T-bird parts vendor's web sites. A good candidate to add to the parts interchange forum...

Diversity is a good thing in cars as well as genetics...
