Ok guys gonna tear into this transmission (I have 2 identical automatics) and im gonna get a hands on lesson on how a transmission works...My question today is where would I look to get any diagrams or instructions on all the parts of the transmission?? if anyone has some diagrams they could email me maybe they would be greatly appreciated... Thanks everyone.... Jeremy
if you buy a rebuild kit it should have diagrams,or a book store for a trans book or auto parts store.
ok just ordered a book thru my local auto parts store.....wish me luck in the experience im about to partake.....any advice about rebuilding this tranny would be greatly appreciated.....thanks everyone and hope to hear from all of you.....
http://www.fordmuscle.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?forum=13&4424 Here's a forum with info too. I used the Haynes Manual, which seems to be real available so maybe its the same one you got. It should be all you need. If you run into problems there's some guys on here that are really knowledgeable too.
ok thanks guys....gonna pick up my manual tonite after work.....start the process tomorrow morning.....always fun learning new things.....i just hope i can figure it all out.....thanks again and im sure i'll be on here with a question or two in the near future
ok i really need some help now......... Ive got my manual.....Chiltons.......it tells about removing the pump from the tranny.....even has a damn picture.......you'd think that'd be enough for even a novice mech.....however it says to place a slide hammer in the holes around the pump....sounds easy enough except for the fact that there are no holes with threads on them to accomplish this task......any ideas at all folks?? input would be greatly appreciated
no replys?? Gotta be someone on here with a hint or somethin.......pullin my hair out trying to figure this out...... Later everyone......hopefully i'll have better luck with this thing today.
I bought a rebuild manual and all the parts to rebuild mine ... then I chickened out. I couldn't see going through all that work of removing, rebuilding and reinstalling and find out it might not work. Good luck ...
not too worried about failing here....if it doesn't work it doesn't work.....lol....but the experience i think is going to be invaluable.....Ive got peeps down here looking for a replacement tranny for me......it's just so damn frustrating right now not being able to move forward any because of one probably simple snag.....
GREAT NEWS....it's amazing what a sledge hammer will accomplish......lol.....few decent taps with it and a punch and it loosened up and came right out.....figured it was a simple problem.....just age related...... so i got the pump off and since i didn't seat the convertor.....as i figured out in my previous thread.....thanks for all by the way.....so anyway the small gear in the assembly had a section broke out of it.....hmmm wonder why it didn't work.....lesson learned.....so i ordered a rebuild kit and im gonna out to my spare car this weekend to grab that tranny.....with any luck that gear is in good shape..... Thanks to everyone for all the input so far.....i'll keep everyone informed of my progress and im sure more ?'s will come up...... Later all and wish me luck... Jeremy Johnson my 73 mav is gonna be runnin one way or another
So which tranny are you going to rebuild? You should just get a new pump and rebuild kit and rebuild the one you have out already. Make sure to get the right size metal sealing rings for the pump stator. Different years had different thicknesses. Also, when you put the pump together the gears have to go in facing a certain way. I found out these problems the hard way. Good luck.
thanks erick.....will def take that advice.......would hate to get er back together and have something go wrong......so if the pump on the other tranny looks like it'll match and everything looks good could i just try that???
What I did was take my tranny all apart, clean it all up, put the guts in a box and took it to a local transmission parts supplier. We looked at all the parts and he sold me only what I needed, which was new clutches, metal seals, paper seals, springs & rollers, new forward drum, bands, rear servo, and whichever thrust washers I needed. The rebuild kits sometimes don't have some of the hard parts that are needed, such as springs & rollers, drums, and washers. It was a fun learning experience for me, even though it took me 10 tries to get it right. Follow the directions carefully and take your time and it should work fine on the first try. The parts only fit together one way.
Thanks erick......Ive got everything out laying there in order....think i'll take your advice and run it in to the parts store and see what all i need to get.......thanks again...Jeremy
