well i finally took the valve covers off
and now i'm trying to decode the heads
i have been told that this engine was rebuilt before

    here is what i found:

    a circle with 5 numbers [1,9,7,5,3}{theres a line on number one}

    also this number[4K27]

    then in big numbers

    65 and 289

    are these of a 65' 289?

    thanks in advance

    Sounds like 289 heads.
According to what I found 4K27 means the heads
were cast October 27th of 1964.
    4=year K=October 27th day.

Keep in mind the '65' is accurate, a part manufactured in Oct.
of '64 would have probably been installed on '65 cars within
90 days of production unless it was shelved as a warranty
    replacement part.

The head number is usually always, next to one of the ports on the underside of the head.

I'll try to get you a pic. :)

Where are some places on the internet where you can decode heads/blocks?

"Off Topic" Hey Maverick75, did you get your Mach 1 yet?

I'm not to sure if this place is correct on some stuff.

If I did it right, my 351 C in my Mach 1 is a 1970 block that came out of a Galaxie? :hmmm: :coco:

nope:mad: the lady sold if right before me and my dad went to go get it
she actually sold it for $580:49: my dad had offered her $1200 she said she sold it because she needed rent money quick

mann i wish i had a time machine:162: we missed it by one day:banghead: :banghead:

then my neighboor told me they were selling a 66 mustang down the street so i go and check it out hmmm looks nice the same paint style of the 350H it even had an aftermarket hood scoop-so i check it out-had a regular 2v 289-so i'm thinking well 400-600 would be ok-then i aks them for the price $5000:49:
    i was like "you're kinding right?:coco: "....nope:mad:

so yeah mustangs have aways been my fav car cant wait till i get one for now my mav is awesome

the only bad part was that my dad spent the $1200 actually $3000 on new equiptment for his restarant

Keep looking you'll find one for a good deal. There is a lot of Stangs out there.

If I'm right your head number should start with a C followed by 3 more digits. :)

Ford Motorheads is partly correct. The part number will be cast into the head and it will contain a letter, a number, two more letters, a dash followed by four or five numbers and if there have been revisions there will be a dash and another letter or two.

For a complete definition go here:

    http://www.mustangsandmore.com/ubb/FordTechData.html

a 66 mustang head will have a number like this:

    C60Z - 6049 - AE

    Hope this helps

Where did you come from? That may be the part number but the entire number won't be "cast into the head". The C60Z will be cast into the head.

Not really. If you go back far enough, say to 65, intake valves are smaller.

I wish I could find the link... anyway, good 67 or 68 model 289 heads flow roughly the same as the E7's on later model Mustangs. Nothing serious there. 1975 302 head castings weren't that bad either. 77 to about 84 casting were the small port 69cc chamber chunks of dead weight.

hmm didnt know that i was just think of the stock listed hp rating

    like 75 was 140

    and 65(289 4v) was 200

i was just going based on how the engine runs:rolleyes:

i've seen a MII w/302 run at idle at it was more calm than my engine

and we have done alot of tuning on my carb but the engine still revs was too high at idle(well I think so):hmmm:

maybe my carb is just bad:huh:

well anyways Thank You alot for the information I really apretiate it (y)

oh yeah wouldnt that give me better MPG...i sure hope so:)
