Hey everyone....just posted on new member board...... Have a question.....I just dropped an engine and tranny in my 73 Mav....both of which i thought were good....were last time they ran....motor(IL250-6) came from 74 Mav while tranny was original to my 73....anyway the motor started and runs about as good as an older motor can....problem is that the tranny does nothing.....when i first tried it i had the back end off the ground and put the tranny in all gears.....it would only move when i punched the accel.....and then it was really slow..barely moving.....then i pulled the coolant lines off the radiator and there was no fluid flowing at all.....My dad mentioned something about the torque convertor maybe having to be the one that was with the original tranny but i think that they are both the same as both were same engine and tranny.....now the tranny doesn't do anything at all.... Any ideas on this.....if you need more info please ask and i'll give it to ya...... Thanks and I hope someone has an idea.....other than it's shot....LOL..... Was all excited thinkin I was going to be driving it this weekend.... ....everything went so smooth till this happened......course that's always my luck...LOL.... Thanks again
Dumb question, but did you fill the trans and converter with fluid, and check it when the engine was warm and in park? Converter holds enough to make it not work if forgotton. Just a thought.....
I just took the torque convertor off and didn't have a lot of fluid in it......and no stupid me didn't put any in before i joined the tranny and motor together......how much fluid is going to need to be in the convertor.....before i go and put either too much or too little in..... Thanks for the info Earl......musta gotten ahead of myself somehow....LOL
make sure the fluid is at the correct level. if the convertor was empty did you pour some fluid in it before installing it. if not it will take fluid from the tranny and then the tranny will be low. check it when the car is running and in park.
Make sure you seat the converter correctly or you'll burn up the trans. The converter should be slipped onto the input shaft and then spun by hand until it engages both the engine and pump shaft. It will drop back further on the trans twice.
The trans and converter hold about 10 quarts. Some more, some less, depending on the size of the converter, and the depth of the pan.
maverick....think im gettin somewhere....took convertor off and placed it on tranny....i don't think i had it seated correctly before.......however that doesn't make sense as the tranny and engine fit together like a glove....could i possibly have a diff torque convertor???? Thanks to all for your tips so far....
Having the converter in wrong explains why fluid didn't come out of the lines when you disconnected it. Is the converter your using the one that came with that transmission?
no its not maverick.....it's off the engine from the 74.......would that be a problem as the motor and tranny are the same in both......right now im pulling motor out so i can put the 2 back together a little easier......
Should be the same unless one of them has had an earlier C4 tranny swap. Compare the two transmissions and verify that the spline counts are the same on the input and pump shafts. Is there a reason your swapping the converter?
it was on the engine so i just figured id use it.....lol.....it seems to fit fine...but im gonna stop working on it for the day so i can compare the two converters over the weekend....thanks for all the help today.....one more question.....once i put the converter on the tranny should i be able to move it at all??its in there and there's no movement through any gear selection i put it in.....
First of all separate the converter from the flexplate. The you can install the converter correctly. Hopefully you haven't ran it long enough to cause damage. The converter will spin freely once installed. In simple terms, it requires hydraulic pressure to create the lockup necessary to spin the internals of the transmission. When installing the converter make sure and dump a quart of fluid in it. Then I place a little fluid on the converter hub to lubricate it to prevent damage to the front seal (replace the front seal if you haven't already done so) Place the converter on the front hub While spinning the converter push the converter onto the transmission You will feel the converter slip onto the transmission when it engages the hub You will feel the converter slip onto the transmission again once it engages the pump
thanks maverick for all the assistance and to the rest of you too....i'll try all this and hopefully will have better luck this time....will get back on next week and tell you how things worked out..... Later everybody....
No problem, good luck with it. Really a simple job once you have an understanding of what needs to be done.
hey everyone.....got original convertor.......both are the same.....however my question now is.....when i get either one seated in place is there supposed to be any movement?? If not how am I supposed to get the nuts back on when i get it hooked up to the engine....If there is supposed to be movement what could my prob be now?? Very frustrated....LOL thanks Jeremy
