If you get a newer engine, they do have some nice perks like factory roller cam and one piece rear seal... But they do have small hurdles and drawbacks to installing in an older car. First, they have no mechanical fuel pump. They are thin castings for mileage and emissions. They will require changing over to an early pan and pickup. The heads are not nearly as good if you don't plan on aftermarket. They have no clutch provisions if you intend to use a manual tranny. They are balanced with the late 50 oz stuff, so you will not be able to use early 302 accessories as you would with an early 351. Just some things to consider if you were hoping for an easy bolt in. The early block is bolt in from the get go, oil pan, distributor, heads, fuel pump, and all. Dave
You need to decide what block you want to use. There are parts to do whatever you want to do. Some basic things like the distributor, oil pans, intake manifolds donnot interchange between the 302 and the 351 because of physical size differences. The deck/block therefore heads will be wider spaced on the 351. Otherwise cams, lifters, heads, timing chain sets, flywheels all are interchangable as long as the correct balance is maintained per the crank used. You can use the old 302 cams (different fire order), the newer 5L cams or the 351 cams in all these blocks with there attendamnt hardware such as rockers, push rods etc as along as the specific assembly uses it's specific parts. Just for an example, I have a 351w powered sprint car. The heads are race type N351 motorsports with their specific roller rockers and special header flange bolt configuration, large valves and hi efficiency combustion chambers. Cam is a Comp Cams special grind flat tappet solid. Intake is motorsports single plane JR with a 950 alky carb. Fuel system is front belt driven pump, feed & return lines with fuel pressure regulator. Ignition is all MSD 7 version with adjustable electronic controller. So you can do anything you want to with these engines. Good luck.
