Ok i know a little about cars. Just enough to change parts. What i dont know is if all the engines are the same. so what im asking is what year (or anything else i might not know) 351w should i find in the junk yard to rebuild? Im staying carberated if that makes a differance. So any help would be much appriciated. thanks:huh:

The 351w engine is wider, higher and a bit heavier.
While it will fit the engine bay, there are exhaust issues due to less space next to the spring towers.
You will get lots of replies on this.

The best 351w engines came from 69-73.
Most will be 2v intake and lower compression.
The good thing is that both are easily fixed and the heads are very good if you are on a budget.
If you go with aluminum heads and intake, you are now back down near the weight of a stock 302, but have a lot more power potential.
If you want good power cheap, get one of these years and put a 393 stroker crank in it. They are very low cost and use the stock rods and stock 302 pistons to get you 40 cubes! Just port the exhaust and gasket match the intake. Now top it with a Torker or Stealth intake and you will will have a low buck brute.

doesn't the 69 351W have a shorter deck height? may be important when thinking about stroker motors.

Why yes it does. The pre-74 blocks are 9.48 deck height, later ones are 9.50 (only .020" difference). Some stroker kits are designed for 9.50 decks only...for instance, a 408 w/6.25" rods....comes out to 9.49 (half stroke + 6.25 rod length + piston compression height).

Between 69 and 77 there was two different deck heights for both the 302 and the 351w.
73-77 351w are the taller deck.
73-76 is the taller deck 302.
The differences cause a compression height difference and was used among other things as a less expensive way to adjust compression ratios in those times by doing a little less machining for emmission purposes.
You will, at times, find different information from different sources about all this.
The motorsports catalog list deck height for the 302 without giving the difference in the early years.
Today there are high deck 302 motorsports blocks that can be taken out to 396 cu/in. in two versions.
