The Mav I picked up from Hotrodtemptress was supposed to
have a 9" rear with posi, but as it turns out it's a 8". The one
thing she had was the original trader mag she got the car from
and it lists the car having a 8" posi w/3.80 gear set. Is there a
easy way to check if this is a posi unit? The car is not really
street worthy right now, so I can't just go out and do a big
burn out and see if both wheel hook up.

    Don

yes...jack up the rear (both wheels off the ground) and spin one wheel. it has something to do with the way the other wheel acts. someone else can tell you what that is. i am just helping with getting the rear jacked up :yup: .

jack up the car. turn 1 wheel and if the other turns in the same direction it is a posi. if it turns in the opposite direction it is an open rear.:)

That's just what I was going to suggest, that's the way to do it. :)

Also, you can take the car to a secluded parking lot, put on the brake, gun the gas, and count how many black stripes you leave on the pavement. If you have more one, it is a posi of some sort. If you have more than 2...um... :hmmm:

    Somebody help ME here...

Or jack it up and spin one tire. If it is posi the other will turn the same way. If not, it turns the other way, for some reason. Has to do with those stupid spider gears that I took out and threw in the yard, like chinese stars. Put a spool in instead, so no questions about which tire has the better traction.

You don't even need both wheels off the ground to check. One wheel up and the car in neutral the open will turn a possi will not, unless the clutches a burnt.
