Well, I just got another project on the road. Its a 83 Granada wagon 5.0 and a 5speed. 3.73's aluminum driveshaft. Its got a flat tappet motor and a mild cam. The thing is, is the motor has a noticable vibration when not moving down the road and greater when the rpms get up there.Heres where the question lays, I put a used harmonic balancer on it, and a 50oz. flywheel on it. Everything bolted up just fine. I dont know if a 28oz would have bolted up??? If the flywheel and balancer are wrong or if its just the balancer giving up...
I do believe the 28oz hb will just bolt right up. Sounds like thats where I would check first since its pretty easy to swap out.
I'm guessing 83 should be 50oz imbalance ... the flywheel & balancer must match ... They all bolt up ... several folks on the board have installed the incorrect balance flywheel and/or harmonic balancer ...
I would seriously consider a type of fluid-damper......they may be expensive but,it is cheap insurance (so to speak)....
Here is the thing... I dont know exactly the year of the motor. The wagon had a 6 cyl in it. I put a 50oz flywheel on it but dont know what the balancer is. It has some vibration through the shifter I'm not sure if I should get a 50oz balancer or a 28oz. Would the motor vibrate like crazy is I had mismatching balancer/flywheel?? Or is the balancer about to take a dump?
First thing you need to do is find the id on he block so you know what you are working with. If the balancer and flexplate don't match the crank, you'll tear up the bearings with the vibration. The block casting is on the side of the block near the starter.
Listen to Matt ... ALL 3 THINGS HAVE TO MATCH ... The Engine, the Flexplate and the Harmonic Balancer ...
