There is a thread that mentioned these and rather than highjack it I thought I would ask a few ?s here. I am running straight 2 1/2 from the headers to flowmaster 40's dumping in front of the axle. The car is loud and very "throaty" sounding ar idle. There is a bit, ok a lot, of resonance (sp?) at idle and below 3000 r's. Above 3000 r's it is the typical flowmaster sound that I love. My ?'s
    1) would a crossover, X or H, lower the resonance at lower r's ?
    2) would a crossover change the sound at idle? (it is VERY loud now)
    3) are the performance gains worth the trouble? (trany work is VERY easy now)

    Thanks All, Scott

x & H pipes will help bottom end torque. as far as noise, it evens out the pulses from side to side. this helps smooth and quiet down the exhaust. H might be more convenient for trans work, but either type tend to happen behind the trans yoke.

X-pipe is quiter. if you put the X in the right spot you shouldn't have a problem removing the trans.. same goes for H-pipe. see photo

What size pipe is that? 2.25 or 2.5?

I've used both H and X. I like the X better...though the sound is definetly different, more like the sound of a 180 degree V8 header on an indy car than the typical American V8 sound that the H pipes make. The X is quieter. X makes more top end power (or at least it did for me) but the H made more torque from idle to around 4000 (MILD 302...done making power at 6000).

My Mustang has an X on it. Have a listen:

Hope the link works...For some reason, I couldn't get xine to play it?!

Anyway, that's what the X typically sounds like...mind you, the exhaust system ends right after the X and has a pair of those little 4" long Schoenfield "mufflers" on it. They don't do much, but they do take some of the raspiness away....and I couldn't imagine that car being any raspier. You wouldn't want to drive it.

Edit: this Mustang did have some 18" long collector extensions (3" OD) and the same mufflers at the end of the extensions. One of the extensions constantly hit the bottom of the car, so I decided to build the X in hopes of it quieting the car down some, as well as 'maybe' picking up some power. A .15 improvement in ET was nice....as was the 2 mph increase (from 108 to 110). I didn't think that those straight sections of 3" OD pipe would cost any power, but in this case they did....either that or the X made more power than open headers:huh:

Mav Man, is that drive shaft as close to the muffler as it looks? From the pic it looks like it would hit if you went over a dip in the road.

My dad's 95 Mustang has a X pipe with flow masters. Very smooth and quiet.

I never had an H. I have an X and it does give it a snarl and quietens the exhaust overall compared to a buddy with the same pipes, mufflers, mostly the same motor and no crossover at all. His sounds like glasspacks.

Note: Mufflers are Hooker Aero Chambers. Some heard it at the Roundup.

Brother's '74 Maverick (used to be mine...BTW, it's for sale, check the classifieds) has a 2.5" X pipe with dynomax super turbos. Sounds wicked to put it lightly. Quiet, but when you shower down on it, it comes to life...sounds like a full-race bred big block with a VERY deep tone, yet you can definetly tell it's not stock.

If I ever get to build another car with a V8...I will do the same exhaust set up.

    Mavman,

I downloaded your .wav file, but it didn't work...it came up as 13 hours and some minutes long, but was silent.

It could have been my computer. I crashed my motherboard, and put my hardrive in another computer until I have time to buy a board and chip, so all my stuff is not currently working the way it should.

Anyone else get it to work?

I currently have my sidepipes off, as the GT40P heads, Hooker headers, and Torker 289 intake go on in the next week or 3. I will drive for a few days (weeks, or until the local cops pull me over, and I am forced to tell them the I am heading to the muffler shop!) before I put on the exhaust, and am still considering a different exhaust setup. I would like to hear/see differences in performance before I make my final decision.

Are those mufflers offset inlet and outlet? Do you have any pictures of the exhaust pipe over the axle? thanks
