i was told that i should use an 85 gt stick mustang distributor w/ the steel gear but the end of the shaft where it connects to the oil pump shaft is shorter than the distributor that came off the 89 licoln, does anyone know if that matters or not?

As long as it engages the oil pump shaft ok, I wouldn't worry about it.

Actually the longer one is probably better ... it will engage the oil pump driver shaft prior to engaging the cam gear for an easier installation. The shorter ones engage the cam gear first and usually requires much more tinkering to get it positioned properly ..

thanx for the info , guys. I just wasnt sure if the shorter one would engage the oil pump drive shaft at all.

I had an issue with the longer snout on my Mustang dizzy trying to bottom out on the oil pump shaft before it seated in the block. I had to grind about 1/8" off the bottom of the dizzy to get it seated...
