What are the gear ratios available for these years in an 8" rear ebd and what is the quickest way to spot them? In other words, are they 2.79 and 3.00 only or were there others as well? What are the rear axle measurements for such, measured across wheel mounting surface? Is the Comet the same or any other make?
    Thanks for the info.

Someone posted a breakdown of rearend widths from various Ford cars.
The '65/'66 Mustang and Mavericks(69-77) and Comets (71-77) had the same
width rear. They were the smallest width rears made.
Keep in mind there were 8' and 9' ring gears as well as something like a 7.5 or
    6 3/4' in 6cyl. Mustangs. The Maverick/Comets early on had a less than 8'
size rear as well as 8' as the largest ring gear size available in these cars.

2.79 and 3.00 are the only rear gear ratios that I have seen.

Mustang rear ends from '67-'73 continued to get bigger. Cougars were larger as well.
The Granada in some years had 8' rears. I am not sure about all yrs. and widths.
There is a needle in a haystack-Lincoln Versailles (Luxury Granada) had a 9 in. rear with rear disc brakes that is the same width as Maverick/Comet rears.

If the rear is original, chances are the tag will still be on it to tell you what the ratio is. The door data plate will also tell you but thats only if it is original to the car. Only way to tell for sure is to pull the center section & count the teeth. 2:79 & 3:00 were the ony rears available in those years you mentioned. 77 was the last year for Comets & MAvericks.

When I saw 74-78 I automatically thought he was talking about a Mustang II rear. :bouncy:
