Ouch. I think I'd be tempted to start with a different car man. That's pretty nasty damage and it being a unibody and all, I'd be concerned about structural damage. There is a white 71 or72 4d up here in Bellingham, WA (20 min south of Canada) that I've had my eye on for quite some time. It's straight as a pin, growing moss on the outside, but looks clean inside. Bucket seats, automatic. Don't know the motor since I'd rather not go opening some persons hood without permission. Anyway, I've left a couple of notes on it, but I don't thinkl the owner has noticed them. It doesn't move. I was thinking I'd leave a really bright orange one so they would be sure to see it. Buy another one... ...don't put a dime towards that $4K estimate. Seth '75 Grabber 2 door in the classifieds for $2000. No visible rust in that one. Seth
Well I guess in at least one person's opinion I'm completely crazy, 'cause I love my 4-door with its 250 I-6. Don't listen to the naysayers. And try to find someone knowledgeable (and hopefully with tools they'll let you use) to help you out. I don't know how big an area you live in, but I assume there must be a classic car club somewhere close that you could join. As previously mentioned, Mav's are a labor of love - it's very rare that you'll get your financial investment back if you decide to sell - regardless of whether it's a 2-door or a 4-door. So if a 4-door is what you want to work on, just do it.
. I'm sure we've all heard the line: "Why are you fixing up a Maverick? Why don't you fix up a Mustang or something?" So for those of you that are telling this guy not to fix up a 4-door mav, think about what I just said. We all have our own opinions about which cars look good and which don't. Some like the 4-doors better, some like the 2-doors better. But the only thing that really matters is what YOU like better, because you are the one that is going to be working on it and putting money into it, and eventually getting the satisfaction of finishing the project. I personaly like the 2-doors because they look a little more sporty in my opinion, but then again some people think that even a 2-door looks like a granny car haha. I think Mavericks are awesome, parts are relatively cheap, the cars themselves are VERY cheap, and they are very rare, especially when they are fixed up. For those reasons and a thousand more, I'd take a Maverick any day of the week.
Hey, just because people are telling you not to spend money on this car doesn't mean they hate 4 doors. It just means you can find 4 door bodies really cheap in the sun belt. That's what I would do.
Thank you MaxPower... ...I think the only point is that he could do much better by buying another car. I wish these fourdoor guys would stop being so sensitive. Geeez!! Seth
Here is a rust free one on ebay currently $660.00 with no reserve. Might not be the best color, but I would rather have something rust free, and deal with changing the color rather than deal with a lot of rust and body work. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6057&item=2412745348&rd=1 One way to look at it is, the four doors either are or will be rarer than the 2 door models because of less demand. It is definitely a buyers market! Good luck with your decision.
i just COULDN'T let this alone any more...as i see it, part of the mistique of the maverick is being a bit different. not a mustang...a vette..a malibu. the list goes on. ok so i am putting a 2dr on the road(hopefully in time to bring it to carlisle) but the bottom line is this ....(imo) us 4dr guys/gals are the mavericks of the maverick owners! i love my 72 4dr 250 c4 disc brakes 85 firebird spoiler, factory pushbutton amfm stereo (thanks again wes!)with the dark green hood from a 70 mav 76 grill sportlamps and most of all i love the daily gawking my car gets from folks everywhere. even on the nj turnpike people roll down their windows (even in january) and yell "love your car!"
I must say although I have now bonded with my 70, our four door will always have that spot in my heart as my first maverick. Four door or not, its a cool car.
I have to agree about the 4 door! My first car was a '74 4 dr with a 250.....It still has a special place in my heart. I would still be driving it today if it hadn't gotten totaled years ago. If you like that 4 door, there's doesn't look like much that a sawzall or torch and a welder couldn't fix for ya! Go for it!
ask around... there have been worse POS restored to perfection. update us with pics every now and then!
well. i cleaned out all of the rust that i could and i got myself a welding kit so i can cut out and weld on what i need..here is what its looking like so far...
