1973 Maverick 250/ C4, Holley 5200 on an adapter, DSII, 6 into 1 header with Y pipe and dual generic flow masters.

The car runs great....MOST of the time. It does sometimes stall though or slowly die and goes dead. It does this driving along at any speed or condition, doesn't seem to be temperature related as it can happen within the first mile. After the engine begins to stall you can let off and sometimes it will return to idle, sometimes not. If you stop, it will always restart immediately but will stall again in only a few feet. It normally does this 2 to 3 times then runs normally again, maybe for a few days at a time. Any ideas? It has a new carburetor that runs great, new fuel pump, rubber lines, fuel filter and new plugs. All of the ignition components were installed "used" from a donar car and had previously given good service.
Could this be ignition related eventhough it "feels" like fuel?
    Thanks for any help guys.
    Brad

Is your gas cap venting properly? take it off and see if it still stalls.

71 & up Mavericks and Comets do not have vented caps. However if there is a block in the vapor line, this will give you the same results.

I dont know about brads, but that didnt help with mine. i even tried running with the cap off for a test. the intermittent thing was because the junk would cover the whole when i was going or climbing a slight hill, then stop blocking it when i slowed and stopped. it would happen randomly too, sometimes the junk would cover the outlet, sometimes it wouldnt.definately stopped when i got the tank boiled at a radiator shop.

With all the recent changes, it might be hard to track down. I would start by removing the carb and using the one old one (assuming then engine was running with it on) or maybe borrow someone's.

Next, I'd start replacing electrical items ONE at a time with the old ones (if still available).

Do you smell raw gas when it gives you the problems?

I'd also pull the plugs and try to read them (or at least compare them to each other).

Just my thoughts. 'Hope you find the demon soon.

Next time it dies on you and won't start right back up, jump out and pull a plug wire off, stick a screw-driver in it and turn the engine over and see if it has fire.
    Then go from there

the same exact problem with mine...i spent some money trying to figure it out....and finally....

the coil was going out....sometimes it would spark.....drive just fine...then not spark and die....hit the gas while it was doing this would cause it to sputter and die or not...but it would die...puch clutch in....turn key...fires up...sometiems dies...sometimes not...

    replace your coil....

If it is electrical, my money would be on the coil. course being a ford, 20 dollars for a solenoid and 5 minutes to change(y)

solenoids out here are about 9.99 and yeah...easy to change....

like i said...i spent alot of money...

solenoid.. cables... spark plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, etc etc etc... finally it was the coil...

of course just like everyone always says....you cant be absolutly sure without seeing the car and seeing the problem in action....

all you can do it elimate possible causes until it works right and you will know that was the last fix you needed...

    good luck....

but keep it simple... look at the most obvious first... rememebr...you must have spark and fuel for fire...

Ok, for good or ill I put a new ignition module (DSII) on the car last Friday. No problems since (knock on wood). If the problem resurfaces I'll let you guys know.
