I was curious how everyone mounted their sport mirrors, I read the post on the nut-rivet tool to install them like factory but is there any reason I can't use a nice stainless steel nut and bolt? I don't want to have my mirror warp the door or anything from pressure points.

I would just use a stainless steel metal screw. It won't be fun holding the nut to tighten them up not to mention if they ever need to come off again.

I just installed mine ... I used a Stainless Machine Screw with the correct head. On the inside of the door I installed in this order ... large washer, small washer, locking star washer and finished it off with a metal/nylon locking nut ... They are nice and sturdy and actually have a larger mounting area now than the original rivnut. Of course the only problem doing it this way is you need to remove the door panel to install them.

Any good marine supply house will have them. I use Jamestown distributors. www.jamestowndistributors.com. Thats also where I got my battery cable to run the battery into the trunk.

Also I would recomend the nut tool just because you dont have to remove the door panel but no matter what system you go with, coat the screw with antiseize so it will come apart easier should you ever have to remove them.

So the factory sport mirrors have some type of mounting nut inside the door???. Anyone just used a regular sheet metal screw simply thread into the door itself???

I got the single chrome mirror and hope to find a set of the sport mirrors to use one day.

Factory had a Rivnut ... a Large Rivet threaded in the center to accept the screw. I don't think a sheet metal screw would be sufficient to hold the mirrors on for any length of time ...

Actually that will work just fine. I had one on my Sprint for many years of hard driving after I had to change a door. That was also before I discovered the tool and procedure to put the correct thing in.

How well would zinc coated machine screws hold up to the elements?

Get stainless, thats about the only kind that will hold up to the elements. You can try plastic, they'll hold up to the elements but wont hold up much else.:D

Get Stainless, you can probably find what you need at Lowes in the specialty fasteners or Cope Marine over in O'Fallon

How do I remove the door panel. My passenger side mirror shakes. I bought a replacement mirror from Dan, but I can't get the old one off. I took the glass out of the replacement and put it into the old housing. It is much stiffer than the glass I took out, but because the mirror rattles so much, I'm afraid it will shake itself loose like the other one. The Phillips heads are stripped on the old mirror, so I can't tighten it up or take it off. I'll probably have to take off the door panel to get at the rivnut, and then what? :hmmm:

Here is a link to removing your door panel.

However you dont have to take it off. You can drill out the screw heads to get the mirror & gasket off. Then cut the the rest of the screw off flush with the nut rivit. THen drill out the nut rivit. Then install a new nut rivit.
