Went and looked at a 70 2 door parts car today. Was a vinyl top car, top rusted thru severlely. 6 cyl auto, supposed to be a good runner. Interior was shot, rats destroyed it. Hood had a dent in one side, same for the right fender. Front bumper was rusty but pretty straight, rear looked fair. What I was mainly interested in was the rear quarters and trunk floor.....nearly perfect, no rust! How hard is it to cut off the quarters and put them on another car? My Comet has the usual behind the wheelwell rust and my trunk floor is gone. I can get the car for $300, the quarters, trunk floor and bumpers I would keep, part out the rest. Would this be worth it, maybe selling off the engine/tranny and whatever parts I don't need that are are still usable? Or would I be better off and just go ahead and bite the bullet and get new quarters from Autokrafters?
i would say no.. then again i live on the west coast. but then again if the bummbers and glass is good maybe. i mean that alone would cost you $300... but do your really need whats on it. something you need to think about.. got any pictures? as for aftermarket parts compared to orginal parts. nothings gonna fit better then and OE stuff.
$300 is OK - if all the stuff you need is decent. You should be able to sell the rest of the stuff you don't need to get some of your money back. Quarters are sometimes tricky to get in right. All depends on your skill level. I don't like messing with them if I can avoid it. Question - are you sure it's a 70 ? As a 70 model had the gas tank for a trunk floor, like the Mustangs did.
Undecided? Sounds like a good deal, but I would have to see it in person to actually decide. Because, you could probably make some money off parting it out. But then again it might be worth restoring.
Make sure the quarters are truley rust free. Paint can hide alot. If they are rust free, I'd buy the car instead of AK quarters. Chances are if you quarters are rusted out, so is the inner fender wells. Cutting them out can be easy or hard depending on what you have to cut with. I have a plasma cutter so for me, its a piece of cake. If you can get your hands on one, I highly recomend them. Dont use torches if possible.
I'm not positive it is a 70, that was what the guy who had it said, I didn't check the numbers, may be a 71. Front bumper was good for a core, back is useable for daily driver. Dennis, all I have to cut it with is a cut off wheel. I have seen it done before, I've never tried it myself and didn't want to destroy my car as well as a good set of quarters. I don't mind cutting it, I just want to make sure I'm doing it right. I'd like to try to kinda break even on the deal, but other than the motor/tranny, I don't see much else useable to sell off.
I voted tell me where it's at and I'll go get it. Honestly, $300 for a small bumpered Mav with a half decent body, how can you go wrong? I'm going to get a '70 thats in nearly the same condition soon. Come to think of it, the one your lookin' at ain't in NC is it?
Well, in my opinion if both quarters are rust free and you could use them, its worth the money. AK quarters will cost you more than that. I doubt you will be able to sell the 6 cyl. I never had any luck even trying to give them away.
No, it's about 5 miles from me here in "Bama. About decided that as soon as I get the extra money up I will probably go ahead and get it. Somebodys allways needing parts, maybe I can offset some of my costs............
If it's a '70 it has no trunk floor(gas tank's part of it)but I'd say grab it,2 good quarters and rechromable bumpers are worth that.Workable valences worth a bit too.
