All V8 IIs had 8" rears, they were all 3.00 gears, they were all 4 lug, and, yes, I have heard over and over that they were all T-lok equipped.
The easy way to tell is look at the tag on the rear itself.
    It should read like this:
    3.L 00
    The 'L' means limited slip.
    If it just says:
    3. 00
    Then it is open.

I have a rearend that I don't know much about except, I was told it had conventional 3.00 ratio. What does that mean? Is it posi or limited? :hmmm:

Conventional suggests open, as in not limited slip.
Check the tag, know for sure.

Btw: "Posi-Traction" was GM's term for limited slip. "Traction-Loc" was Ford's...

Will the 5 lug axles that are in my car now fit into the mustang housing so I can convert that rear to 5 lug?

All Mustang-IIs had the 8-inch rearend, including the 6-cylinder models. All were 4-lug. The 6-cylinder models had 3.40 and 3.55 gears and some were traction-Lok (limited slip). The center section will bolt right into a 5-lug 8-inch housing...

No. You need a 5-lug housing for stock 5-lug axels. The center section (third member) will fit though...

So, I can go to the junk yard and swipe the center out of and old mustang II and have a posi?
    What should I look for?
So, what I'm gathering here is:
    6-cylinder models had 3.40 and 3.55 gears
    and V8's had 3.00 gears
    Is this correct?
Then how do I know it's got the 3.55 traction loc?
    would it say
    3.L40
    or
    3.L55
    ??

A worn out trac-loc will act like an open rear if you try this. Best bet is to jack up the whole rear and spin the pinion. Both axles will spin in the same direction on a A posi type rear. They will spin in opposite directions on an open rear.

Nine times out of ten the tags are gone, pulling and counting teeth is the sure way to find one. Was curious if you knew of a yard that has some of these cars, they are very hard to find around here. If you know of some, get the front end off them too, they are quite desireable for many modifications on Mav's and other street rod build ups. Complete one goes for around 100 dollars here, maybe more in your area.
