Nope, they are not the same. A flexplate is for an automatic, and a flywheel is for a stick.

corbin, I am putting an 86 roller into my mav that is currently a 5 speed.

I want to mate the roller motor up to my c4 auto. Can I just use the flexplate from the old 72 motor and bolt it up just fine to the 86 roller moter?

    Hey Jeremy,
For the 86 5.0 you need to get a different flexplate. You need the 50 oz balance flexplate vs the old 28 oz on the original 302. You can either have your old one rebalanced to 50oz, or get a new 50 oz balance, 157 tooth flexplate made for late model 5.0/C4 applications. I know Ford Motorsports sells them, and B&M does as well. I have the B&M and everything has worked out great (It was cheaper than Ford's, too). The funnest part is getting the pilot bearing out of the crank so the flexplate can bolt up. I got my flexplate from Summit. Here is a link to the page: http://store.summitracing.com/defau...e=bysummitpart&searchtype=both&part=bmm-50239

Hope this helps. I don't know how much of a pain, or how expensive it is to rebalance your old one, but that may be a good option too.

I used my stock 1972 C4 flexplate & the original C4 trans with my 89 5.0 conversion. All I did was balance match the C4 fexplate to the AOD flexplate. I ran the original starter as well.

thanks for the input guys, I will likely look into the b&m solution, as my engine is coming out of a 5 speed mustang, and has a flywheel right now, and not a flexplate.

This thread is back from the dead. I am collecting parts, as my mother is forcing me to have my mav running by mothers day so I can take her for a cruise.

I just bid on THis: based on what corbin suggested.
