I don't know if this is the right forum or not, but here goes. The more I fight with carbs, the better EFI looks. Here's my question. I know that Ford put 5.0 and 5.8 liter EFI motors in trucks. I don't know if the 5.8 EFI was ever standard equip in the any of the mustangs/Capris other than the 95 or so Mustang Cobra. I know that some of the 5.0's were roller cam, but I don't know if the 5.8's were roller cam. Now then, with that out of the way, I am wanting to take a 5.8 EFI put the stroker crank/rods in it and make a 408. But I am going to keep it fuel injected. Hopefully I can find a 5.8 set up for a roller cam. I figure I can upgrade the intakes/heads/MassAirflow/injectors/ignition/etc and have a pretty bad 408 EFI in the Maverick. Another question is about the computer. Could I use the stock computer and put a programmer on it to account for the upgrades? I am really liking this idea as it would be powerful, yet reliable, and I could STILL put the blower on like I've been wanting to do. I'm just tired of fooling with carbs and I think this would be really neat when finished. I am in an automotive class so I would have plenty of time/means to do the work. I am going to talk all of this over with my instuctor, but I have always run my ideas past all of you here for your input and advice and I will continue to do so. I have learned so much from y'all and I value every comment I get from you all. Thanks y'all! Preston

Preston; if you do this, trim the shock towers first, so plug changing and header clearance won't be too much of an issue. The late 5.8 engins were rollers, just like the 5.0's. Can't address the computer, but go to: www.windsorfox.com and you should find some of the answers you need. They can also address the AOD question. Good luck!

I think it is such that any 5.8 with the date code of F4... is roller capable. It might not have a roller cam but has the taller lifter bores and spider hold down holes ready to go. Don't take my word for it though please as I am going from memory.
Can't help with the computor but if you find any websites with alot of computer help please list them here as I am looking at putting a 2.3 Turbo coupe engine in a Maverick and will be needing ALOT of help.

Before diving into that kind of project I suggest you get the latest copies of Mustangs and Fords Magazine and do some research. There are several different options and engines. (Windser and Romeo) The modular motors 4.6's and 5.8's from the early 90's to 05's are NOT the same. Different heads, exhaust/intake ports, manifolds, etc. Do your home work first. Afterwards, that carb might seem alittle more appealing.

    Good Luck,

    Ken

Right, I knew about the differences in the modular engines, and I know that the 5.0 swap has been done by a few members on here. The only thing I'm wanting to do differently from the fuelie 5.0 is use a 5.8 with a stroker kit. Now that I know that there were 5.8's that are roller compatable, I don't forsee any major obsticles other than the usual fuel delivery/return lines, intake and the other things that I have read about from those who have done the swap. I think this is very likely the route that I am going to take. I think that I could make good power, have a reliable engine (not that mine isn't now- I'll put it in something else) :D and the fuel injection wouldn't be quite as wasteful on gas (I know that there'll be some controversy here)....... But while I know that this won't be as simple as when I swapped from I-6 to V8, my biggest thing will be the computer- and I'm already checking into that. This has been in the back of my mind since I first heard of a local guy doing the fuelie 5.0 swap with early mustangs. I'm gonna call him tomorrow. I think it's do-able........:16suspect Just gotta read up on a few more things, like you said. P.S.- Thanks for the website Mr. Earl! (y) And for the date code, I'll check into that tomorrow. Thanks y'all!!! Preston

Look into the aftermarket EFI systems.
I ran across some Edelbrock papers on their EFI, and it looks pretty cool.
The kit is a lil' over 2k, but it comes with EVERYTHING. You don't even need a laptop with Edelbrock's system, it comes with a programmer.

I think an aftermarket system is you only choice to flow well enough to accomodate 408 well fed cubic inches. I don't know of a factory system that will do it.

With all the conversion equipment required to run fuel injection, plus the mods you will have to make for your plans (intercooler, computer reprogramming, modified fuel system with return line, thousands of $$$) you will be begging for the day when you could play with a simple old carb!

I knew a guy many years ago that had the Eddlebrock system on his Mav. He said it never ran right from day 1 and spent countless hours with their tech line trying to get it right. He finally gave up and went back to a carb. Now that was a long time ago when the system was fairly new. Hopefully those problems were solved. Personally, I'd stick with the factory set up. I'm sure bigger injectors and programming chips are available to make it work.

    I tend to agree.
The Edelbrock system does look tempting, especially with it's own tuner...

I have to disagree with the stock design not being able to feed 408 cubes.
You would surely have to run lots of aftermarket accessories, but the basic intake and a reprogrammed computer would make a good foundation.
There are so many high HP Stangs running with the stock basics that it could be done.
Just figure on bigger injectors, fuel pump, fuel rails, TB, MAF, etc...
    All adds up though $$$$$

Thanks for all of the replies y'all. For upgrades to feed the cubes, I was thinking of aftermarket Mass Airflow, BIG injectors, A good fuel pump( and perhaps a booster pump), Upper and lower intakes, an 85+ TB, Rails- I think we get the picture. I've been talking to several people locally here, and It's my understanding that the stock computer can handle a fairly large amount of mods. I think that if I use good judgement and have reasonable expectations, that I can make this a fairly :D powerful, but reliable engine. I don't think 450 horsepower is unreasonable to shoot for. I realize that this is not something that will happen overnight, and that is all the more reason for me to go for it. I can take my time, do it right, and have the end result that I want. I've been reading a lot of old tech articles in some of the mags that I have, and checking out the above websites. Some good info on there. (y) Thanks for sharing them. I'm not planning to tear into this in the next day or so, I'm still reading and researching. I appreciate all of the comments and advice, and as always, please keep it coming. Thanks!! Preston

Preston they also offer a lower intake for the 5.8 that uses the 5.0 upper and harness say from a mass mustang and yes with the right combo they will feed the beast.
