I looked at a Maverick here in NC that has a rear like that. It is a 5 lug with the rear bolted on cover. The axles have the holes counter sunk in the head-at the hub-kind of like 31 spline axles. Seth
If it's an early Granada, and the rear's never been swapped out of it, I'd say it's most likely an 8.7, which apparently was a fairly weak unit. According to what I've read, Ford didn't introduce the 8.8 until 1986.
I've never heard of the 8.7, but yea, I thought the 8.8 didn't come out until at least 1979. Which is after the leaf spring Granada era.
If anyone would seriously like to use an 8.8 in a Mav for the ease of gear selection and traction lock, take a look at the later Explorers with leaf springs. The spring pads may need to be relocated and some other minor mods as well as using the correct wheel offset. Don't worry about the 8.8 strength, there larger and take a beating in late Mustangs. I have the same rear (8.8) in a 3900 lb Lincoln with a Kenne Bell blower up front.
The granada is a '77 , it had a 250/C5 . I pulled the rear end and I will get a better picture of it tomorrow.
Well it took me long enough but here is a picture of it out of the car . Every one think its an 8.8 still ?
Looks similar at least. The tags on it, why dont cha take it off and post what it says (or take a photo?
I don't remember what the inch size is, but I read on a Stang site this rear is a transitional design that evenutally became the 8.8, but wasn't quite there yet.
whoa, wait. Wasnt there a 6 3/4 rear made? I believe I've seen something like that in a Maverick before....in a boneyard.
I still think it's likely an 8.7. Check out this link, toward the bottom of the page, under "other possible donors..."http://www.ultrastang.com/Rearinfo.asp?Page_ID=1
