Hi all. Got my 72 Maverick for Christmas. Well, actually, I owned it for several years, but my daughter kept bugging me to sell it to her, so I gave it to her. Missed it? You bet. Immediately after it left home.

After that, everytime I visited my daughter's, I noticed the Maverick wasn't there. Then, this last Christmas, I go outside, and my "bodyman/painter son-in-law and my daughter are standing by this restored Maverick, which they intended to give me for Christmas. Surprised? Yep.

Now, I thought I knew, but am having second thoughts about the type. This car has the small hubcaps with the car color painted in the outer ring, with wheel rings surrounding the hubcaps. Car has the wider offset rims. Has a 250 engine with automatic xmission. Original paint had blue stripes down by rocker panels, and blue striping on the hood w/blue stars in between. Car is now white with Mustang stripes on bottom sides. Somewhat different than stock, but beautiful. Still need the correct grill for it though.

Also has the Mustang type mirrors, one of which (drivers' side) is movable.

I Thought I had a Sprint. Does it sound like one?

Also, anyone know where to buy a new idler arm and gastank sending unit for this car? Is the Mustang idler arm and sending unit the same by any chance?

Thanks in advance for any replys. Jack

That is a Sprint ... they really should have repainted it properly ... :(

I recall seeing one on eBay with the stars on the hood, and there was some amount of debate over whether it was a legit Sprint or not. If the door data plate is still intact check the trim code. The trim code for Maverick Sprints was "RB".

Hi all. I wasn't sure whether to start a thread on the "new members" forum or not, as I am not new, but hasn't posted in quite a few months. Just been away from my car with other jobs. If I am supposed to post elsewhere, I hope someone will correct me.

Oh, before I forget, I do have an RB, so I now know I have a Sprint.

First of all, I thank everyone who responded to my post. I appreciate the quick responses.

Also, DM, I really agree with you that the car should be painted as original, but when someone gives you a nice paint job, and new interior, among other items, I guess it is hard to--shall we say--"look a gifthorse in the mouth". I would later like to paint it with the blue stripes, but will drive it a couple of years with this new paint job, as my sone-in-law and daughter were so gracious to do that for me. I still am very proud to show it off.

Would you believe a guy drives by my house in the country and asks if my car is a Falcon? Ha ha. Then, a while back, a kid sees it and says, "my dad doesn't like those cars because they look like a Pinto". Brat. Ha ha. What an insult. Ha ha. A Pinto? That was the only car Ford really goofed on. I had a few.

I have been driving Mavericks basically since 1980. Love the way they look and handle. Also, now, with gas over $3.00 (gulp) that 250 doesn't do too bad in that respect either.

As far as the idler arm goes, I couldn't find any dealers around me (Kragen, Pep Boys, Napa, or others that had one) and same went for the gas tank gas guage sender.

Thanks again for the help. Really great group. Will try to stay in touch more often now. Love the stories on here.

Yeah ... I agree you can't be upset about a great gift like that. It's kinda like the OverHaulin' show. Some of the things they do to the cars I would not be happy with if it were my car ... but since most of what they do is pretty sweet you really can't complain...

I was at one of my friends house the other day helping him put a new bumper on his POS '89 Toyota Carolla. His dad walks out, stares at the front of the car for a minute, then walks to the rear and startes at the back of the car for a minute. Then he says "A Maverick... Thats like a cross between a Mustang and a Pinto, ain't it?" I just looked up and said "yea, somethin like that" and went on with what I was doing.

Sometimes it ain't worth trying to explain it to people. They do have Pinto tail lights. :)

I'd slap the #### outta that kid. The only part that looks like a Pinto is the taillights, and I changed those on my Maverick...

It was his dad who said it, he's probably in his mid 40's. :)

Actually a mix-breed of a Mustang, Pinto, and Falcon.
