Hey, I've got a serious traction problem in the old '75 302 Maverick. The rear is still 3.00 open, but the ratio works well with the 24in (hehe) Mickey Thompsons. Anyway, has anyone ever run a spool on the street? I realize I'll be dragging the outside tire around every corner, but it may be woth it. The tires just get burnt off anyway, so what the hell. My other option is to find a factory posi that'll need rebuilt anyway, or a new Eaton limited slip for almost $500. I like the spool idea - what do you guy's think?
351 mav, do you ever drive in the rain. if you do you'll lose traction at the corners making it extremely dangerous. i'd go with either a posi unit or something like a detroit locker. a rear end company here in the phoenix area quoted me $425 installed. check around. spools not the way to go on the street.
Buy a posi. You'd hate a spool. Especially with wide tires, it won't just wear them out the car will flat out NOT want to turn.
DON'T. Do it the correct way. You would find sometime that going into a turn fast, the car's front will want to push (not turn), then you could be in trouble.
351, it all depends on which conditions you drive the car and your willingness to tolerate some issues unique to driving around with a spool. I do drive my car on the street with a spool and what the others here are telling you is true. Do not put one in the car if is your. I do not drive mine everyday and it stays in the garage if there is any chance of rain. Do not put a spool in your car if you do not want to hear the tires screech around every turn. It feels funky to turn a corner with one because the back end wants to bounce around. The more flexible the tire's sidewall the less noise and chatter you will encounter as the sidewall will aborb this. You will also have to work the motor a little harder when making turns. Just drive with common sense and don't drive 100mph and you'll be fine.
i have to say that the hostility demonstrated above is some thing relitivly new on this board. when i first joined it was very friendly. if an old post was revived by a "newb" it was pointed out in a friendly manner. if people jump all over a new members mistakes then they will not come back.
I been on for most of the day and I for one had noticed the guy posting at will. His name was suspicous as well. I had a gut feeling this was no newb. A newb could also be someone with intentions of malice. I saw no where where he was associating, wanting to be known or even any real intrest.
He posted 25 posts in about 2 hours. His board name was offensive. It appears he was banned. From what he was posting....didn't look like he was a serious member.
