I'm going to mount an electric fuel pump on the rear frame and I need a 3 amp electrical connection. I was thinking of maybe hooking up the pump to the fuel level sending unit electrical wires since those will no longer be needed with my fuel cell. Is that connection hot when the ignition is turned on? Does it have enough electrical capacity? How have some of you hooked up an electric fuel pump? This is for a drag racing application.
    Thanks.

What type of pump are you running? 3 amps for a racing type electric fuel pump is fairly low. Regardless should run a new fused circuit for the pump and wire it through a relay. You can then activate the relay via a switch or a switched 12v source.

It is a Quick Fuel 140 gph pump. The wiring you've explained sounds pretty simple and I know I have to run a bunch of stuff off of relays with switches, but I need some help. Can anyone recommend a website or book with information on wiring race car stuff. I also need to wire my electric fan, battery in trunk, ignition, and other stuff???

Erick i would recommend the relay too! I have mine all hot-wired which is really bad! i'm gonna change that soon! however if you look at any relay there should be a wire schematic diagram on the relay that will show you how to wire it.

The fuel level wires dont even carry 12 volts. Its actually the ground circuit for your gauge. If max load current is only 3.5 amps, you can just wire it off the run side of the switch. Relays are normally for high current applications. You will also need to put one of those switches in that will kill power in case of an accident.

It is a pretty easy job to wire in the pump.

10 amp fuse to oil pressure switch to to relay from relay to pump and from pump to ground. key switch ignition circuit to relay coil from relay coil to ground.

Don't use a wire from the ignition coil + terminal for the relay coil. If you are running a resistor or resistor wire in the ignition coil circuit it will lower the voltage to the ignition coil when the pump is operating.

Don't use the fuel sender wire - even if you re-attach it to the relay and then run it back the wire is too small for the current - use a 16 - 14 ga wire to your pump.
