Hello guys, Im a newbie to car mechanics, but am very interested in getting my foot in the door.

I have a completely stock mavrick from 1970, and I have
no clue what is original. I would love to start hopping this baby up.
any Ideas? Mabye a Better Air intake system, new carbs, better exaust system? Green paint?

I want to run some crome pipes along the side also, how much work is that?

thanks guys, any input at all is welcome.

Welcome aboard. There are quite a few people running around with hot rod sixes on this board. I'm sure you'll get plenty of great advice. You've found a wealth of Maverick knowledge by coming to this board. Glad to have you. Have any pictures of your car?

Well ... if it is 100% stock it has a six-cylinder engine ... not much you can do without spending big bucks ... swap in a 302 for the best bang for the buck peformance wise ..

Chrome pipes along the side...do you mean sidepipes??? :bananaman :bananaman :bananaman

Yeah baby, yeah! Another sidepipe guy! You will love them, or hate them. Sound great, look great, but you have to have a little 1970's in you to really enjoy them.

Patriot Side pipes from Jegs, $150 bucks, including the glasspacks and the shield. Or, make your own headers and collect them outside the fender. But don't go for the Patriot "fake" collector with the one functional pipe and 3 decorative ones.

Best thing about sidepipes...as you drive down the road with your 180 HP 1974 engine, 8:1 compression, EVERYBODY looks!!! TWICE! (y)

PS--Don't listen to TL. He hates sidepipes.

    dm

That is purely an estimate. I would guess that my Mav has 180HP, since it is faster than my 360HP Hemi Dodge 1500, and my wife's 250HP supercharged Bonneville. Plus, I took stock data, and added in all the modifications I have made.

Does 180 sound too high? Honestly?

I recently raced a 2003 Mustang GT and he beat me by only one car-length or so on the 1/8.

Honestly, my "180" is purely estimated. I would love to find a way to get a better reading. Any suggestions, short of finding a dyno?

"The Hand of War" who started this thread has a 250 6-banger ... he might be pushing 80HP or so ... Didn't know you meant your car had 180HP .... :)

Welcome, and do NOT put side-pipes on it. Why would you want to do that to such a cool car?...

    DUDE, you live in PHOENIX!!!

lets stay on topic. I am NOT a moderator, but stay on topic anyway.

Disregard TL's comments regarding side pipes.

Sidepipes are cool, But TL and I have been going around about this for about a year. He KNOWS they are cool, but will not admit it. This, from a guy who loves the Pinto! (TL, not me):rofl2:

    Sidepipes it is

Wow, jeez guys, thanks for the super speedy reply~ I wasnt expecting to see stuff for a week. Anyway, I cant honestly tell you how much horsepower, is there a test I myself can run? and how much would a good 302 cost?

Would a hood scoop or somthing along those lines help my engine run cooler? What else would?

Thanks and My first purchase will be the sidepipes, and thanks for the info on those especially.
