What did I miss?

    Wifes Explorer suddenly wouldn't crank, turns over but won't hit. I figured out the fuel pump wasn't working, no pressure at manifold rail, can't hear run when key is on, heard it before the problems started. Today, after I got home, my son and I dropped the fuel tank and installed a new pump. Same problem, pump will not run. I have checked fuses, the relay clicks when power is applied, swapped the relay for another just to make sure,checked the shut off switch under the dash, still the pump is not running. To add insult to injury, after I took out the old pump I hooked it up to the battery and it ran fine! I know I had to have missed checking something, but what? This is driving me crazy. Anybody got any ideas? This car has 215000 miles on it and still looks and runs great, but my patience is wearing thin on this deal.

    My dad's Mustang was doing something similar and after going over most of the wireing with a continuity tester, it turned out that one of the wires going to the pump had a short in it right where it went though the trunk grommet. His car had 163,000 at the time.

    Well,I didn't check the wiring like that but on the Explorer it runs inside the frame rail,but there could be a open place in it somewhere. Thanks Jamie, thats one more thing I can look at tomorrow.

    you might want to look at the crank position sensor, usually the first thing to look at on an electronic engine and the easiest to repair. or it could be a coil pack.

    Would that affect the fuel pump? The pump is not running at all....,new pump installed today, still no pressure at the fuel rail.

    Missing my old '70 Maverick
    The scenario could parallel that of a recent episode with my fuel pressure regulator.

    The tank went dry, I assume air got into the regulator and for some reason, would not allow fuel to pass through it after I'd filled the tank.

    Note: Remember also, that the fuel pump only stays on for like 5 seconds when the key is turned to the ON position. You have to turn the ignition OFF then back ON a few times.

    Once I bled the regulator, I had to turn the ignition ON and OFF several times until I saw the fuel pressure rise (you can also hear the pump load up if you don't have a FP gage).

    It cranked right up after that.

    Just an idea for ya (to look into the FP regulator). 'Hope it's nothing serious.

    I know there should be a pump relay,don't know where it is on an Explorer but on a mustang it's under the seat.Usually when they go bad there will be no power to the pump.Probe the wires goin into the pump,see if power is being delivered.GL

    look at the passenger side kick panel, kind of up and to the side, its a red reset button, these are very sensitive aand can and will trip, just push it down and reset it, if its not at the right kick panel the open the rear hatch and there should be a small access panel, remove the panel and the button should be the same as I first described, check for your relay, they can go bad, had an a/c relay bad on motorhome-a/c worked fine previous trip and then did not work, weird how these things quit without warning. good luck

    Your Exploder has an inertial shut-down switch for the fuel pump. It shuts off the engine in case of a rear-end collision. I had a '96 Explorer, and the switch shut down the pump for no reason, but it has a push-button reset. I can't remember where it is, but it interrupts the circuit and the pump won't run. Give it a try, and let us know.

    Thanks for all the replies,guys. Heres where I stand right now-Sat morning.......

    1.New fuel pump installed in tank
    2.Inertial switch under dash-ok not tripped
    3.Fuel pump relay clicks when you turn on key, changed anyway to make sure
    4.All fuses ok

    I am going to take the line off of fuel rail at the regulator next, then try to follow the wires to look for a short or cut. Will check back afterwhile, time to go get down and dirty with this thing!

    Another Thing To Check Is The Fuel Filter, It Could Be Stopped Up. Had One On My Snap-on Truck Comletely Clog Up Barely Made It A Mile To A Truck Shop Before She Quit, If You've Never Changed It Then Its One More Thing To Look At.

    FOUND IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or at least my brother-in-law did! Was a blown fuse in the high voltage box under the hood that I had missed when I checked them. Just think, a .50 cent fuse and I bought a $90 fuel pump. :huh: Oh well, at least I got my exersize dropping the fuel tank :rofl2: . I guess since he's SAE certified, he notices things quicker than I do, so he makes the big bucks and I drive the trucks :biglaugh: . Dog, I hate this electronic BS, give me points and a condenser and a carb and I'm happy (y) . Thanks to all who responded with great ideas, I knew I had missed something thats why I asked for help, thats what makes this board so great, we all try to help each other out, even when we seem to overlook the obivous.
