Ok, finnaly got everything bolted up, clamped down and sealed. Came home from work, pre-oiled the system and turned the key.. errrrr, errrrrr, errrrrr low batteries! Drats, grabbed the jumper cables fire up my wifes new VOlvo and still the same.. I know the engine is a bit tight, but could there be anything else slowing it down or making it hard for the starter to turn over? I am charging the dual batteries I have in the trunk overnight. But, anything else that could cause this to turn over so hard? Also, can I be hurting this new motor turning it over like this? (had a fuel leak by the tank that slowed me down tonight How can it start leaking now?!! errr)

How's the engine ground? That'll cause that sort of trouble.
I used a big braided strap from the frame to the block.

solid motor mounts and a ground strap. Nothing changed from the original motor, except the pistons, cranks etc...(kept the lumpy cam we both have!)

Something I would do before trying to start it any more is try turning the engine with a breaker bar. If something is binding up, you don't wanna keep cranking that thing.

I did. If it was binding I don't think I could have aligned #1 with a breaker bar..

probably just tight. Double check your timing of course, but I'm betting when it hits it'll fire right up.
We went through that with my cousin's 289. Seriously dragged when we tried to start it. Once it hit a couple of times, I dialed the timing in a bit better, it fired right up. Started smooth as silk the next time...

Old redneck shadetree trick.....take the plugs out, crank it over a few times without compression to insure complete lube, then reinstall plugs, double check timing, then put 24 volts to that sucker! Just make sure all accs are off,ie radio, wipers, lights, etc. This only works if you have points ign, don't think I'd try it with electronic, though [except for taking the plugs out and turning it].

Good ideas.. Sometiomes in the frustration of it all you ignore the basics! Charging the batteries today while at work. Will play with timing tonight. Thanks all..

Also if the carb is dry the engine will have to turn a bit to fill the carb bowls up.

All the above were ok. Charged the batteries, came home from work and WHOLA! First key turn the motor fired up, went to 50# oil pressure and sounds great! Broke a bolt on the alternator bracket so I can not run the water pump, so no running the motor more than just what I have done. BUT SHE STARTED! vroom vroom

If your not running a roller Cam make sure you go thru the breakin procedure if you installed a new flat tappet cam. You will wipe out a lobe real quick if you don't. You need to run a new flat tappet cam at 2200 - 3000 rpm and kinda vary that speed from time to time for about 25 minutes to complete a breakin
