Now don't flame me for this but,... The local country fair is starting to run "small car" demo derbys. The rules are, 6 cyl. and under 2,700 lbs. I'm thinking a gutted 4 door big bumper 250 Mav would fit the bill nicely. Would this car weigh less than that? Weight is including driver and fuel. Also if anyone near the Pittsburgh area knows of a rusted out 4 door big bumper Mav for cheep please let me know. Thanks Russ
I have no idea but i dont like the sound of demo derby and maverick in one sentence. I know you'll be using a total junker but still.... it hurts my heart
I agree with Dan. A small bumper 4 door is advertised at 2776. You would have to gut an awful lot on a heavier big bumper to get it down low enough if they are actually gonna scale you.
After removing the glass, interior, gas tank, lights, grill, chrome, gauges, and adding 200 lbs of driver, it would be real close. I thought it would be cool to "beat up" on "ricers" with a Mav one more time.
I looked into doing it here. Unfortunatly....the "Mini-Class" only allows a 4 banger. A Maverick would be in the same class as the full size cars. Sounded like a death wish....so I decided not to do it. If you can find a derby that will allow you to be in the Mini-Class with a 6 banger......I say go for it.
My grandpa's gotta' 71 LTD with a 429 4V that still runs rusting away in his field. Now THAT would make a good demo derby car.
HALT! - Please put the sledge hammer down and step away from the Ford! That 429 4bbl is a torque monster. Same rating as the 427 dual quad from 1965! Way to valuable to demo. Go get a Chevy or big ol Buick to junk and SAVE THAT MOTOR!
Take out the carpet , dash pad , lower dash , back and front seat, put in a bucket seat , take out all the glass (you got to any way) , gut the rear doors and front right door , gas tank ( ya gotta use a fuel cell or boat gas tank) , e brake system , de-junk the trunk, head lights , tail lights and thats all I can think of . Oh yea a 200 will weigh less than a 250 so you`d be better off getting a 200 powered car.
Acornridgeman, I have been trying to talk my grandpa out of that motor. I think it would be awesome in my '71 F250. Gas mileage would suck but it would only make the occasional trips to the junkyards/towing home parts cars anyways. F250 has 3:73 gears in the rear and I bet it would light them big ol' truck tires up.
