Hello everyone. I am building a 400 hp motor for my 71 mav, what rear end should I use that can handle the hp & bolt up with out too much trouble? Thanks for any help.

I have been told a 9 inch from a late 60's Bronco is bolt up.

I have heard, but don't know for sure, that the 8" is good up to 500 HP.

If you have access to a 9", I would definitely go for it. I would, even with my 200HP.

The 9" rear end out of a '66 - '77 Bronco (the small ones) is 1.5" longer than the stock Maverick 8" rear end. That is corrected with backspacing on your wheels. You just have to move the spring pads. On a Maverick, the pads are 43" apart and on a Bronco they are 36". I have two Bronco housings with axles (no center units). One may be for sale.

    Same range.

I'm going for the same range. Leaving the 8" in with detroit locker. How long it will last is a perpetual discussion. Some guys have great service from it, some wear them out. Only an occasional track day planned, so mine should last a good long time. 9" is the more bulletproof way to go, but may not be necessary.
How are you getting to 400hp?

A well built 8 in behind an automatic in a light Maverick should provide you some good service time with up to 400 hp. That is you don't do neutral drops, or are always drag racing it. Kind of depends on you intentions of use?

With a manual it might be more questionable if you are truly feeding it 400 to it.

Check the tech article section on FordMuscle.com. They ran a white 67 mustang HARD (here in Sacramento) on two different traction devices installed in an 8". The articles on both are types are enlightening.
