Found a '70 sitting in a tow yard. Bought it for $300. Owned by a friend of the owner, stored for years, smacked left front, frame looks like it's still straight. Prowling any spot where 5 or more cars were spotted together paid off. Rest of the body in great shape, interior other than seat covers is great and same color as the 74. 250- it's an actual L code vin, 250 sticker still on the air cleaner, c4, 3.08 axle., ac, ps, white/blue int, 4 lug wheels. No parting has occured, still even has the stock hubcaps. Pretty rust free as far as I can tell, sitting on the rims, all tires flat, battery tray is even corrosion free. Motor was obviously running before the smack, just clipped the outside of the bumper, folded stuff around the outside of the frame, everything inboard of the frame is untouched, radiator etc. So I need a small front bumper, have a grill, nos off ebay, and the fender already. No emblem on the grill but I've already got a 70 grill emblem stashed at one of the local junkyards, lol, was expecting I might need it one day. Hood is dented but easily fixable. Soo, now the plan is put the running gear off the 74 on the 70, the buckets too, the 289 into the 70 of course, make the '70 my hotrod, and put all the 70 gear back on the 74 with the 250(74 is a 200 now) and give it to my boys, 13 and 14 at the end of July, for their first car. Maybe hop up the 250 just a little so they feel like they have a hotrod but without actually giving them something that would get them in too much trouble. Any problems putting the 70 stuff on the 74? Never seen anyone talk about doing it in reverse. Anyway, they'll have a car they actually helped build, might make them a little more responsible right off the bat. Of course they'd rather have a ricer with flames on it and a biplane wing set but free will turn their thinking. As an aside, found the exact cam(Isky) that is in the 400hp motor build I'm following, it's a non roller, about 99% sure the 400hp is with a non roller block, so I'm stoked about that too and upping my hp hopes about 30. Have trashed the idea of starting with the 600 cfm carb too. It's vac secondaries also and it will work better on my Cougar which isn't built and currently 2v. Probably go with a holley 750 dp. I have a '70, whoohoo!
Man, congrats on your discoveries!! Some guys have all the luck!! Sounds like you know what you want, and have a good start of getting there!! Good Luck!! Preston
I'll let them fight. Yeah, that occured to me. What I'll be hearing is, "Dad let MEEEEE use yours". They can just go together or one can cave and use mom's tempo. No way new drivers are getting mine. Either them, or the car, or both, would end up dead, can't be having that. They're better as a team anyway. Got a good laugh when they first got in the Cougar, first thing from each of them, "Dad, I can reach the pedals". HAHAHAHAHAHAHa, don't even think about it youngster. And there was only a little luck involved on finding the '70, I make it a habit to look. The luck was that it wasn't parted or sold previously. I knock on doors for cars I don't even want just to see if they are for sale. Cheap hobby, ...usually.
