Well I have been up in NC for the past week workin' on the Mav. I decided to just put all the pic's I took on my site instead of wasteing the bandwidth here. http://5hp.hill.cc/Maverick/swap.htm I got it all back together and yesterday I drove it about 30 miles. When I got back, I shut it off and went inside. I came back out about 30 minutes later and tried to start it and it just turns over real slow. I tried 3 diffrent batterys in it with the same result. The starter sounds real rough, and I also can't turn the motor over by hand. I think I need a new starter. At least I hope thats the problem. I would hate to have to take it back apart with less then 50 miles on it. :16suspect So the car is still sitting in my grandpa's field up in NC. It will be about a week before I can go back up there and figgure out the problem and hopefully bring it home. It kinda sucks not haveing anything to drive... Looks like I have ALOT of catching up to do on here.
Definitely soundsd like something in the starter if you can't even bar the engine over. I had the same problem in my '84 F150 and though I had seized the engine but decided I was going to pull the starter out first. Pulled the bolts out of the starter and it stayed in place. I had to fight to get it out and when it finally did, a washer came flying out. Don't ask me where the washer came from or how it got jammed in there but it did, between the starter drive and the ring gear. No damage was done, put the starter back in and all was good. This would be the first thing I would suggest doing, especially if you can't bar over the engine. Second would then be to disconnect your belts which would eliminate any problems up ft. but I think your starter or something jamming it. Hope this helps. I was initially thinking that your timing was too far advanced but if you let it sit for 30min it definitely should have cooled off enough by then.
Yea, I haven't touched the timeing the whole time I have had the car because my dad checked it and said it's pretty much right where it should be. I'm about 90% sure this is a starter problem, but we're about to leave to go on a trip to Rockford, IL to a Vintage BMX bike show (my dad used to race and collects them) and I just ran out of time. We won't be back from there until Sunday. Should be intresting. I've never been that far North.
I bought a cherry 77 Cobra II Red and White with a 302 in it with less than 50,000 miles on it about 10 years ago for 500.00, the owner said the engine locked up on it. Well I bought another engine and when pulling the starter off there was a torque converter nut lodged between the starter and flywheel. After reinstalling the starter and pouring some gas in it it started right up. !!! Hey, Jamie I'm 39 and still own my P.K. Ripper BMX bike I rode back in 82, I noticed they are going for big bucks on e-bay now around 1500.00
Terry, it's good to be back. A week away from here feels like a year, I tell ya. Can't wait to get down there and check out what you got going on. MiteeMaverick, We have several old PK Ripper frames in the garage. My dad raced Red Lines, Skyways and Kuwahara's mostly. He raced from 77-83 and was #1 in the state of Indiana. I have a bunch of pics that I plan on getting up on the net soon. I will post here when I do We have several of the rarest BMX bikes there are now days, and lets put it this way. You could build a couple of very nice Mavericks for the money that those bikes are worth.
That's some good documentation of your progress, Jamie, Way to go! BTW I had a Diamond Back when I was a teenager, I'd rather not say how long ago that was. Wish I'd never sold that bike.
I remember a few of my friends had Kuwaharas when I lived in Okinawa. Those bikes were what the "rich kids" got to ride. I was stuck with a Mongoose
I'll post some pics when I get home of the show, I'm sure some of you old BMX guys would like to see the bikes. There was about anything you can imagine there.
Jamie, I had the same problem with my I6 not turning over. Turns out, its not wise to breakdown two of the same engine side by side...I mixed up the main caps. After I put on the right ones, I could turn it over by hand. Now it starts up and sounds so awesome with my headers, which I would recommened...(Pacemaker headers). Jeff
Just a little update, I got up here last night and swapped the starter and still couldn't get it to do much. The old starter was falling apart, the gear was stuck out, half stripped, it had a broken washer laying in it, and it had shards of metal in it. Put a new starter and solenoid on and she fired right up. Drove it about 60 miles this morning and it seems to be going better then ever. Probably driveing it home late tonight or early tomarrow morning, gotta wait till my cousin Patricia is packed and ready because she wants to come down to the big ATL for a week or so and go shopping. Anyone know where you can buy just the plastic tube and the brass compression fittings for the oil pressure gauge? My tube got a cut in it some how when I was pulling the motor out or putting it back in.
Jamie; don't get the plastic tube...you can buy a kit that will work fine, and it gives you a copper tube and all the hardware. I have an extra, if you are interested, but any speed shop, or even an Advance or AutoZone should have it. It is made by Stewart-Warner, and is about $15. Good luck!
Most good auto parts stores should carry the 1/8 copper tubing by the foot. The should also have the fittings and ferrules you will need.
