I don't own a Maverick. I actually have a 66 Mustang, but it has an engine from a 73 Maverick. I need to rebuild the heater core. Any tips before I start? Doesn't appear to be any huge job, but... Also, I have a bear of a time getting the car to stay running when it gets cold. Gotta lay on the gas until it warms up. Anyone run into that problem? This is more a general automative question. I'm okay under the hood, but diagnostics are not really my thing.
1) You mean replace the heater core? 2) Poor cold idle is either fast idle or choke adjustment.. perhaps a rebuild is in order ...
I have the same problem with the 250 running rough when it's below about 50 degrees here in the morning. My grandpa says thats just somethin' them old 250's do...
my 250 used to be like that then i redid the valves n it changed. now it does somthing really weird it runs fine cold, and misses and dies when it warms up??
Well, I don't feel so bad about not figuring out the problem now. Growing up, I did the minor stuff (tune-ups, brakes, etc), but never seemed to have the time to learn much more. Now, it seems I would need a hoist to change the oil filter. That's kinda what prompted me to go back to an older car with a normal engine. To answer the other question, I am probably going to replace the heater core. This is an issue that's actually over and above the cold start (40 degrees or colder) problem.
The heat riser tube (goes from exhaust manifold to air cleaner housing is a must for easy start ups on a 250's
my heat riser tube is missing, but that still doesnt make sense why its good cold bad warm haha, but hopefully by the end of summer it wont be a problem, im just about to pick up a 302 for 50 dollars and im gonna rebuild it to my standards over the summer, first rebuild for me so wish me luck dont really know what im doin haha

Hey, thanks. I'll take your advice. I'll also pick this up. I'm pretty much a novice, as I said, but am a motivated novice. I'm looking to rebuild/mod the 250, rather than try to upgrade to a gas-guzzling V8. It's a daily driver for me, so mpg is a consideration (though not the "be-all, end-all"). Couple questions. What's the likely HP I get from the 250 (nothing done to it)? Also, the guy I got the Mustang from gave me a set of headers. They're rusted over, but appeasr to be in good shape otherwise. Worth putting on? What could I expect, as far as output?

I also have a 250cid in my 73 comet. My brother showed me a catalog and it was either jegs or summit or jc whitney,,,,, but they sell an intake for the 250 6cyl that will alow you to upgrade from the 1 barrel carb to a 390cfm holley 4 barrel. also they sell a one piece exhaust header to make the motor sound a little meaner. Let me know what happens. and add some pics of the project. we love pics here
Everything but the engine should be complete by summer's end. I fully intend to have before/during/and after pics. Just found a transmission leak. Nothing serious, just a seal. Still, the engine is going to be a good project for me. Just gotta convince the wife it's worth the hassle. She's great, but she simply doesn't "get" why I'd prefer to drive a 66 Mustang with the problems associated with older cars over a used Volvo.
