Hello everyone! Well I went out to move my mav under our carport because it had started to rain and when I tried to shift out of park it just slide into reverse but did not move. I tried moving the shifter into drive but when I finally got it out of reverse it was technically in drive but moving backwards. So then I tried puting it into D2 then D1 and it would only reverse (gas pedal moving it not rolling). It will not move forward at all! Could something on a linkage be broken or worn (1 1/2 year old B&M automatic shifter) or am I looking at a tranny rebuild? Someone mentioned that maybe it might be that the "band" is broken and that the tranny might just need a tune-up. I obviously can't take it anywhere tonight but when I take it to the tranny shop I need to be armed with as much info as possible to avoid getting it up the a$$! By the way it drove just fine this morning when I went to church and to my work (did however go through a few big puddles). Please help, any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks again!

It doesn't sound like a broken band or a tranny rebuild to me. It sounds the linkage is the first place to start. How does it feel when you go through your selections?

It moves somewhat freely but does not go "into" any of the gears. It slides out of park but it stays park and sometimes into neutral but that's about it. What is so weird is that it worked just fine this morning. Just when things start to go well something else will go wrong! Thanks for your help maverickguy.

First thing that i would check would be to crawl under and see if the linkage is still tight and in place.

my gut feeling says that the nut inside the tranny came loose and allowed the shift lever to come off the flats. There's been a rash of this going on lately around here, both with the powerglides and the c4's.

Just to keep everyone posted, I took the mav to the tranny shop today and they checked out the linkage and it seems okay so now it is time to open the tranny up and take a look inside. So far the guy told me that I am looking at $100 minimum and that he will have to see what is wrong but that he will let me know along the way and okay pricing before anything gets fixed. I will keep you updated. Thanks again.

Jeri, thanks for the update. Sorry it wasn't your linkage :( . The linkages do get out of adjustment, so I was being hopeful that was all it was. I just finished a auto drivetrain class, and I was looking at a dianostic chart this morning and comparing it to your updated information and it does list several possibilities with the tranny itself. Hopefully you have a good and honest shop that will get you on the road again, without taking you for a ride! $$$ Let us know how you make out. Good luck!!! :)

Well I am happy to say that the Tranny Gods have smiled upon me! It turns out that a screw that is attached to the shifter cable came loose! $37.50 and 2 days later the mav is shifting better than it ever has before! But I just found out that I need to reattach some throttle bar that connects to the carb. Unfortuantely I didn't think that I needed it cause it was only for the passing gears but someone told me that I need it to get into my powerband, soo...... I was wondering if anyone had one lying around or knows where I can get one to fit my 73 302 with a Edelbrock 650 cfm carb? Thanks guys for all of your help!

That kickdown rod is just that. If you leave the car in drive and floor it, it will hold it in the lower gears longer but you can do the same thing by shifting it manually. I have never bothered with them on the few automatics I've own and never missed them.
