Just started a "how cheap can I do it" maverick project. So far: car-$350, motor 66 289-$200, heads are next, probably gt40p's up to about $400. Although just saw a build list and dyno on a 400hp non stroker with 289 heads. Too much work in them though for me to go that route and still keep the cost down. Goal is 260 whp, hopefully a little more, nothing real radical, just enough to have some fun. Will take a while, but I'll just drive the '70 XR7 Cougar convertible in the meantime(yeah, I really wanted a Comet GT). My $350 car looks like crap right now but will fix up pretty easy, no rust issues to deal with, just upholstery, front seats(I'll get redone really nicely for $100 each) a headliner, and carpet, and a little bodywork and paint which I'll get cheap here next to the border. Gonna have to fight the urge to dump money on the motor though. Already got a lot of good info from you guys by eavesdropping, so thanks.
Why a maverick? Because I dig the way they look and the light weight, and the ease of putting a V8 in a cheap I6 car. And I'm tired of looking at a million mustangs. All the mavericks I see on the road are still doing what they were designed for, cheap transportation, so I'm looking forward to the surprise factor also, no grabber clone, want it to look like gramma's car, except the wheels. Looking forward to talking to y'all.

Hi:wave: and welcome to the board.:Welcome: Sounds like you have a neat project going there. I'm a former Mustang owner myself, and even though I still get whiplash when I see a nice 69' or 70' Mach1 go by, I'll never regret trading my last Mustang for my 77' Maverick. Sometimes it's good to be different. They really are great cars and you can do just about anything to them and they will still look cool.:) Glad you found us.

Sounds like a good plan. Take plenty of pics and document everything. Could come in handy for someone else down the road.

    one more step.

Thanks for the welcomes, guys. Looks like I have the heads, ebay, supposedly brand new and mildly ported for $5 under my target price. Shipping doesn't count, right? A good step to beating the 260 number if all turns out well. Fingers are crossed until I actually see them.
Don, I do a lot of travelling around AZ, go by Gila Bend regularly, maybe we can take a cool off break somewhere and talk Mavericks someday.

    Eventually

Yep, it will get there when done but that's going to be a while. Funny, went by there Friday and wrote down their number to find out when I could go watch. If you meant Sat. the 7th, I'll probably see you there. Also will look for a website after I get done here.

Found the website, are you going to be there Friday also? Thinking I might go friday and watch all the street legal stuff. Take my 12 and 13 year old boys and laugh at them oohing and ahhing over the silly looking imports.

yeah, i'll be there on the 7th, saturday. i don't usually go on friday nights as the drive is about 85 miles for me. if your there i pit about 3 spaces across from the rest rooms near the spectator stands. look for the blue maverick. there's usually a red maverick parked a few spaces away also.:)
