The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Hey you gys the other day i was having a disscusion w/my uncle on the power brakes that a previous owner installed in the mav. He was telling me that if they go out it would relly be hard to stop. Since i've never actually driven any car on the road that kind of made me scared. So i'm wondering if i should convert them to manual. My aunt said its not hard to brake on manuals she drives a 66 falcon. so i'm wondering if someone would consider trading their power steering for my power brakes thing i think its called a booster its that round thing.Or for any other part they dont need.

Drive it down to a deserted road, pull the vacuum line, block it off, then try them out. Then let us know.

It's not to bad to stop. Just put a little effort in it. It definately won't stop as good as it usually would, but I wouldn't worry about it to much.

My '71 F250 has 4 wheel power drums, and I was running about 70 when the engine blew and it still stopped ok.

That's too hard Dennis. :D Just turn the motor off and stop. It is not that hard, just takes a lil leg. :)

    Automatics RULE.

Anyway, If you already have power brakes on your car, I'd leave it. The only good reason for converting to manual would be if you had a radical cam that did not pull enough vacuum to operate them efficiently. You can still stop if the power booster fails, it's just harder. Don't fix something that ain't broken.

Only reason I converted to manual disc instead of power is that it would have been more trouble than it was worth to convert to power...

The only reason I don't like power brakes on these cars is space. My Comet has A/C and power steering,it's kinda cramped up in there with a v8.More so with the booster & mutated shocktower brace.

Leave what you have on the car....just make sure it is in good shape and you shouldn't have any problems.

I have a non power brake, non power steering and manual tranny....My wife doesnt appreciate it at all!

In a Maverick....yeah, manual brakes are a must with a V8 engine...as is manual steering. They're light enough so that manual steering is fairly easy to steer..even sitting still. My vote for a Manual trans too IF it's a street car. Drag car, yeah...I belive in automatics. After all, if you break a C4...you're out what, couple hundred bucks max? Break a topolader and see what that thing'll cost to have repaired.

Sorry, I'm still kind of aggravated at the prices of manual transmission repair parts. I'm working on a WC 4 cylinder T5 for my SVO...had to buy a "kit" with synchros, seals, etc...thing costs over $100 and there's not a single part in the "kit" worth more than a couple bucks, maximum. Thank goodness I didn't have to buy bearings and any other hard parts....I'd probalby have to take out a bank loan!

I agree with T.L. If they are on there now and working good, leave them alone. You can't forsee the future so there's no since in speculating that they might go out one day. Odds are...they never will!!! If they do, you can still stop. You just have to push the pedal a little harder.

That's why mine is a non power brake or steering also...my wife won't drive it. This leaves the car strictly for me:p .
