I need to drain the coolant out my engine block, but cannot find the plug. Where is it? Also, this would be necessary if I am going to replace my water pump, right?

    77 Maverick, 4 door, 250, 6 cylinder.

    Thanks.

Look on the bottom of the radiator. There is a petcock that will open and let the water drain. You should drain the cooling system when you put on a new water pump. It is very smart at this time to replace all the belts and hoses, too. Flush the system and put in anti-freeze when you are finished replacing the pump and hoses. This may even be a good time to take the radiator out and take it to a radiator shop and get it back in top notch condition.

Thanks, I got the the one at the bottom of the radiator. I thought there would be another one somewhere, as I only drained less than a gallon out of the radiator. There is still more in the system and I want to know how to get it all out.

There is no other plug. Once you remove the radiator hoses a little more will come out. You are not going to get the engine completely dry.

I know V8's have a plug in the block. Not sure about sixes, but if they do (most blocks do) it will be in the water jacket by the cylinders, usually towards the bottom. Blocks drains are notorious for rusting in place or snapping off when you try to remove them.

Unless you are rebuilding the motor, I would just flush the coolant with conventional means and not worry about the block plug.

Max is right. I chose to say there is no other plug to keep you from looking for it (my bad). It should be left alone for your particular need at this time.

I remember this coming up a long time ago and there is a reference in the Chilton's book about a block plug on the 6 cyl, don't remember if it was all of them or not. I'll see if I can find it.

if your only replacing the water pump, just take off the lower radiator hose. this will allow enough water to change the pump. you'll never get everything out of the block.:)
