First of all I am planning to keep my 250 and build it up, a little at a time, on a shoe string budget, to that end.... I talked to Mike with Ford 6 .com last Friday, and he said the first upgrade he would advise would be to switch out the existing distributor, and upgrade to the Duraspark 2, with either a ford or gm module or an aftermarket one, with limited.. basically no experience he says it is a very straightforward upgrade... comments? Suggestions.
He said to just buy the set up for a 78 fairmont.

Might also want to look at the Pertronics set-ups. They replace of the guts of the original dist. are very easy to install, give you electronic ignition plus no box to mount on the inner fender. I think they are selling for around $75 or so at Summit

DM which one did you do the duraspark, how much of that kind of work had you done before that, will it work with the stock carb set up.. for now. I plan on going with a 3 carb set up eventually

100% Stock 74 250 Engine with a C4. Duraspark setup from a 77 Mav. Adjusted my plugs from .036 to .050 as per Chiltons. Runs great and idles much better.

None of this was necessary but I also removed all the EGR crap and have basically 2 or 3 vacuum hoses left. I used a non-EGR carb plate from a 1970 250. I also swapped to a 77 carb since it was recently rebuilt and my 74 was original.

I have a freshly rebuilt 250 and a 3-speed manual tranny that are going in the car. I just wanted to do the electronic conversion now so I have one less thing to troubleshoot later ... :)

I"ve put Dura Spark set ups in alot of my cars. I've also used Pertronix. The Pertronoix is way easier to install, but the Dura Spark is pretty easy too.

Is it the Ignitor setup? If so, what year model # should I look at for my '71 200ci?

    pertronixs ignitor

I have pertronix igniter in my 72, I had it in my 73. Fits in your distributor, no boxes or bunches of wires to clutter up your fire wall, no more points, and just 2 wires red to hot side of coil , black to other side. You will need a hot coil. I think its a great thing...Jim
