Planning a trip to the local junkyard soon and wonder if anyone knows if an AM/FM from any other Ford model fits a Mav? Last time I was there I got an AM/FM from a 76-77 Comet, but it doesn't interchange. Thanks. Tom
I doubt you will be able to find any AM/FM radio's to fit the small radio bezel of the 1970-1972 Maverick/Comet. This AM/FM radio is extremely rare and they fetch $200 for non-working ones at swap meets. This radio also fits the early Torino's, some Mustangs, etc....so they are gobbled up quick. My suggestion, FM Converter tucked away up under the dash where nobody will see it. Keeps the original look and great tunes as well. That is what I had on the 70 when I owned it. I left the converter "loose" and it rested on the package tray. When I got to a show, I would stuff it up under the dash where nobody could see it. The sound quality was pretty good as well....way better than AM.
$200??? WOW!!! I picked this one up in the local junkyard for $10. It works and came out of a 75 Maverick. I'm putting it in my Sprint. As you can see it fits in the bezel just fine although the Ford symbol is partially blocked. I dont know if this is a Maverick original or not. It is a AM/FM mono which is what I wanted. I didnt want to cut speaker holes in the back.
The 1973 and up radios are a little easier to find than the 1970-1972 radio. Dennis, I have that exact same mono am/fm radio in my station wagon.
Question for Mavaholic or Craig??? I got a similar radio out of a 75 or 76 Comet for $10 at a junkyard, but seem to remember that it won't fit a 70 bezel. Did you have to do anything to get it to fit? Thanks.
Craig Do you know what years for the Tornio's and early Mustangs. I'm intersated in getting one for my 70 mav.
I'm not exactly sure what year radio will fit from a Torino or Mustang, but I am guessing 1968-1972. To get a bigger radio to fit the small Maverick bezel...you would need to cut the nose hole bigger. You can do it with a die cutter, or find a buddy at a machine shop to do it. In the picture Dennis posted, he didn't cut the bezel but mounted the radio behind the bezel.
