Due to some life choices and a lack of foresight, I'm considering selling my maverick and all of the parts associated with it. I have around 6,000 invested in the car, parts, and body work. I know I won't get half that back and I'm fine with it. I do however have a lot of stuff I'm going to need to sell and I think there are plenty of desireable parts. My question is, what do you guys think I can get for my complete, but disassembled '77 302 2 door? It does need some rust repair, but I have a driver's side donor patch for it. The rest of the repairs are to the very bottom of the passenger quarter, the passenger side torque box is rusted, but certainly not gone, driver's side is in very good shape, the rocker panels are spotless and need 0 work. I have fully restored doors and fenders for the car with about $1,000 in paint and metal work (bottoms of the doors were re-skinned with new sheet metal, etched, undercoated on the inside, (same treatment for the fenders and I have pictures to back up all the work) and painted with 4 coats base 3 clear of peacock red. I'm not worried about being able to sell the engine front and rear suspension kit, sport mirrors complete with gaskets, rear heater, and all the other new parts I bought, I'm sure I can break even on those. Just trying to ballpark some stuff. Even if I sell the car, I'll still be around to chat with you guys, maybe even make the roundup.
Wierd, I just mentioned you name in a reply to a post made by fast95 who is in Illinois also. Are you sure you want to do this?
Well, it goes like this. I start my last two years of college at the end of this summer. The maverick is not going to get completed or even driveable in the next few months at the rate things are going. I know that someday I'll look back and wish I pulled through it but the economics are overpowering. I'm thinking about picking up something turnkey and enjoying the feeling while I've still got it. I would take a Maverick but have not found any that suite me within my price range. Instead I've got my eye on a '74 Duster with a 360/727. I guess I'm like any young guy with a lot of dreams and a love for fast cars. Maybe in 10 years when I'm out of school and established in life I can take on a REAL project but right now I'm in over my head.
I could see where waiting another couple of years could impact your enthusiasm with the project/hobby. You should get together some pictures of the car and a listing of the parts to post on the forum. I am getting ready to purchase suspension parts, let me know what you got, if it is what I am looking for we will work it out. Allan
XPSNAKE, Dont get discouraged, I too work at a full time 48hr/wk job on 3rd shift and go to college full time (14 credit hrs+) . (I even have to take two summer classes..bummer) . I can really relate to the time and budget constraints. I have thought about selling mine also but every time I go and do something to it I want more and more to finish it!! You are going to do what you need to in any case but I would like to encourage you to follow the car through to the end. Im sure you will be very satisfied by doing it yourself. Good luck with whatever decision you make... Jerry..
dude sit and think about it for awhile. i know when someone starts a project most really want to get it done and sometime get overwhelm with what needs to be done not to meantion all the regular things in life. and other time i do understand if you really need to sell something just to make things meet. i'm sure each person is differant. i know when i was 3 years old my father needed to sell his 1965 shelby GT350 for $3200 when i was 3 years old! yeah thats right $3200 bucks! i can even remembering crying seeing seat belt stick out of the door as it drove away! but now i know my father needed to sell it! well one was becuase of me and i really am greatful to my father for that. however i do know in some way he regrets selling it. so if means out way a hobby by all means sell it! however your situation does not sound as bad. in fact it almost sound a bit like mine awhile back. i know everyone is differant but for myself back more then 11 years ago i really needed to focus on what the heck i was going to do with my life. like shcool, getting married not to meantion my horrible spending habbits which created bad debt! what i did was instead of selling my car i just put in it storage for about 6 years. it was hard not to do anything on it and seeing it just sit there, but i did it. i found other outlets like buliding models and or outlets that keep me busy and spending gobs of money but not being overwhelmed either. i must admit that god works in weird ways and its funny how things just work out. so after a 6 years of doing nothing to my car, after finally paying off debt like mad, getting things right with my life and getting a halfway decent job i took the car out of storage. today i am really glad i didn't sell my car. i guess you can say i had to regulate myself to keep the things i wanted to do in the future. best of luck and what you decide to do! p.s. my mother always use to tell me.. one day a maverick might be worth something so you should keep it. today not that a maverick is worth anything but i'm sure most of you hear has seen within the last 3 years how popular this car is becomming. you never know.
If you can find a way to get a driver, put the Mav in storage untill you have the bucks to finish it. I know the restraints of avaible time too well- I drive a truck and I am gone from home 5 or 6 days a week so Saturdays are my only time to do honey-doos and hobbys. I'm still collecting parts for my car and when I have all I need, then I will start on it. Look at it this way, maybe you are over your head right now,but in a year or two things could be differnt. Patience my man, Rome wasn't built in a day and your Mav won't be either. Heck, its been about 20 years since I built my last hot rod, but it's never too late to work on your dream, sometimes it just takes longer than we want it to.
xp would hate to see you get rid of it just becuase your wallet is a little skinny. when you feel that way just remember me......I bought my car from my sister in 1995, I drove it once in about 1987 and have never driven it since. It has been in storage most of its life since i have owned it. in fact it hasnt been tagged since 1990. just within the last couple years have i had the time and a little money to start redoing the car. I cant wait to put it on the road which i was pushing for this year but is looking like next year now due to money problems. trust me i feel your pain. i just keep on keeping on. lol
