Was at the wrecking yard yesterday and picked up some serpentine pulleys from an 80's Crown Vic as Charlie had suggested in one of my previous threads. They fit really well. Got a 42" 6-rib belt today and it also fits nicely with still a bit of room for adjustment. Tried to find a 3g alternator when I was at the yard too but there were none to be had. Not sure whether I'm going to need an extra spacer on the factory alt, it seems to sit just a hair back from the other two pulleys. What do y'all think?
That does look a bit far back, may want to throw belts. I'd at least throw a couple washers on the bolt that the spacer is on to bring it out, it looks like that would be enough. I've been thinking of doing that myself, just have not been out there to look for anything. I do have a crank pulley off an 83 lincoln, but it had a v belt water pump on it, so it's not real useful.
m/m, i am running the ..alt...water pump/fan and nothing else...did "charlie" say what pullys i would need and if i would have to run an idler pully?...frank...
Frank, here's the link to my original thread: http://www.maverick.to/mmb/showthread.php?t=12433 My reason for doing this was because, like you, I'm converting from power to manual steering, and I figured since I needed to track down a different water pump pulley anyhow, why not just change everything.
m/m, thanks for the info. i will be in the "j" yard tomorrow...were your new pullys 3 or 4 hole?..saves me from having to go out and look...frank...
Frank the Mustang II I sold to Olin has that same set up on it. Its pretty slick Pulleys are 4 hole .
Dave, I can't say for sure 'cause the main point of this for me was to get rid of the power steering, but my best guess would be "maybe". Best thing to do would probably be to hit the local yards with a measuring tape and check out a lot of LTD/Crown Vic's. Pulleys are cheap at the yard here at $5 a piece, so I could afford to do some trial and error if it didn't work out right the first time.
