I was thinking about replacing my gas tank in my 73 and since no makes replacement tanks , why could'nt I just make my own from either steel or aluminum. That way I could make it fit the car the way I want it to fit. I would make it so I could use stock type sender from any number of fords that would be easy to replace. Anyone have any thoughts as to why this would not work or any input on this? If it did work out would any one want one for their car? It would not look like stock tank ,more like fuel cell, but would bolt in using stock mounting location. To me it seems like it would be a simple thing to make but maybe there is more to it??

Yep, my dad made one out of aluminum back in the early 90's for his Comet. Worked great.

Not sure if I have any pics, but I'll look.

Pics would be great if you can find one. Any info on how to go about it would help too.

Aluminum is easier to bend, harder to weld. Steel is harder to bend, easier to weld. How good are your welding and fab skills? That is the best way to decide what you feel most comfortable with if you do it your self.

I made Tammy's out of 6061-t6 aluminum. I used a stock sending unit mounted on the top of the tank and made a seperate pick up tube. I put a drain in centered the tank and put in bevels for exhaust clearence. That tank holds 19 gal, of course I did all that work only to find out that dennis/mavohalic used a mustang tank and basiclly got the same result.

Well, I can't find any pictures of it. If I were doing it, I would go the Mustang tank route.
