Someone pleese help!!! I have a 75 mav the engine it came w/was a 302 2v i'm like the 5th owner now and i'm trying to figure out what engine it is cuz i'm trying to fix it up inside it has a 4v edlebrock manifold but i dont know if a previous owner just changed the manifold or the whole engine does someone know where the engine id is at and how to decode it to find out what year the engine is i noticed that the coil is on top of the manifold at first i thought it was a 289 and those look like they have the coil verticle but then again you can use it both ways also i would like to know if someone knew how to decode the tranny so i can find out which one it is the headers on it looks like original stock 302 ones but i think those are on other engines my neighbor who new a previous of it told me that the guy had put a racing motor in it i think since 75 on the gov started with the emissions things and restricting the horses so the guy probaly put an older one in it i know alot of small blocks can use the same parts like the starter i got it for a 67 289 and it worked on it but i think those fit 302's also but when a problem occurs i want to know what engine it is to buy the right part like the harmonic balancer i know those wear out in a couple of years and i think the 289's and 302's use different sizes so can someone pleese help me. I also had another Q the other day i looked under the car and looked at the driveshaft and noticed that it wasn't like stairgt to the i frogot what its called but its where the driveshaft goes to in the back anyways i looked like it was wrong is it supposed to be like that or what i havent actually moved the car since the rims are messed up i just started the engine. One last Q sometimes when the i ry to start the engine it stalls and it kind of spits out air from the top and bottom of the carb but when it starts it does do it i'm wondering if the carb doesnt work or if the header or muffler are blocked and if it is the carb which ones are better the ones w/a manual choke or an electric?
I'm trying to decifer your spelling as to understand what you are asking? so here goes-you can your block numbers on the passenger(right)rear side of the engine, down near the starter area and decode from there. 2. if your driveshaft is not straight then you will have to remove it and take it to a driveshaft repair shop for a look see and balance. 3. not seeing or knowing what has been done to your engine, I would suspect that you have a timing problem if its hard to start or a loose or broken battery cable, or possibly the engine has jumped timing. pull the engine up to top dead center and your #1 cylinder and pull off the dist. cap and see where the rotor button is pointing, it could be wired wrong, there are several things it could be, just process of elemination and you will find it sooner or later, good luck-email for more help.
pe·ri·od n. A punctuation mark ( . ) indicating a full stop, placed at the end of declarative sentences and other statements thought to be complete, and after many abbreviations. Good luck with the Maverick ..
I'm out of breath after reading that. It is normal for the driveshaft to go up a little from the rear end to the transmission, because the rear end usually sits a little bit lower then the trans. The drive shaft itself should not be bent or anything. I think you would have had better luck posting pictures of what you think is wrong. The sputtering sounds like a timeing problem to me.
Sorry for my punctuation, no wonder I have a "D" in my lit class. Miles I think what you said about the rear end is right the shaft is not bent I just thought that it looked weird. Waynes fords its not really hard to start just when I dont pour gas trough the air inlet thing on the carb it stalls and it looks like exhaust come out from the carburator and the engine dies. Also do you know were I can decode the block numbers.Thank you all for your imput.
Cant find numbers I went down there today but I couldn't find the numbers. I got a little drowsy down there blood went to my head. I tried to look there but I only saw the started and the headers. Do I have to remove the started to get the number. I remember when I was putting in a new started i got a number from there but dont remember it only remember it had an "A" in it.
some north east advice!when looking at something under your car do not stand upside down until you lose conciousness!!!
Hey Burlap1 I wasn't up side down just were the car is I think it sank so thats why I got drowsy and I had a fuel leak.
you'll have to remove the starter to see the #.It should start w/D5 or D4 if it's an early '75 & it got a leftover '74 motor.
