Going to start building the motor starting this spring.
Got 2 stock 302's stock, (not for long) and 2 C4's and 1 T-10(needs Put Together). This will be a Street machine but i will want a good pedal
back in the early 80's when i had my first maverick I had a 302 with
    A toploader 4 speed, headman headers, crane cam(mild) and a Holly 650.
It ran ok with the exception of the 2.76 rear end, got great hwy miles.
but i see some of you guys have an elderbrock carb are they better or
    worse to work on.

The Edelbrock carb is easy to calibrate and I believe still comes with complete tuning instructions. For street use I would us the Edelbrock.

If it was me, I would call Quick Fuel Technology in Bowling Green, KY. give them your motor specs and its purpose in life and let them build you a carb.........:hmmm: wait, it was me that did that. :biglaugh:

Seriously, they build nice stuff at a fair price:

Street use, Edelbrock or AFB. Holleys are excellent carbs, but they tend to be troublesome over a period of years. With the edelbrock carbs, you can tune them most of the time without removing anything but the air cleaner and 2 little plates, where the metering rods are located. THere are only idle mixture screws externally on Holley-based carbs. I will admit, I love Holleys...but 30+ MPG in my Mustang (with edelbrock 1405) is hard to beat. I'm not sure I could do that with a Holley carb, BUT, I "could" make about 20 HP. I'm not as worried about that though--especially at $2.10/gal.

    carbs

I've got the 600 eldelbrock (1405). I LOVE THAT CARB.

Things I learned the hard way:hmmm:

1 Check and reset floats befor running carb. my floats were way wacked from the factory. = raw gas dumping into motor

2 Get a fuel pressure gauge. I found a stock fuel pump to be putting out too many psi and "overriding" float needle/seat. also=raw gas dumping into motor.

Buy the jet/rod/spring kit. why, it's fun and easy to play.:bouncy: pn 1479

good lit with this carb. carb theory, procedures, charts, ect. EASY to work on

oh ya buy some torx bits. they hold on metering rod covers and top of carb. having a vacuum gauge is nice also. and a tach. I've also got a O2 sensor, but i don't use/go by it.

get the edlebrock in the cfm you want. and don't give up if it acts funky. you'll get it.(y)
