Ok, I've got a 'new' to me PEE type tranny to replace the one in my Comet (the Comet's tranny won't go into reverse except when cold, )
I figured rebuilding this one (a column shifter, like my Comet, I believe,) would be easier than rebuilding the toploader currently in my Comet (The reason I know it's a toploader? R = Race, not Reverse, and D = Dammit, wrong direction, not Drive... :p And Park is apparently 2nd... )
Anyway, the C4 still in the Comet has a passing gear lever, however, this trans doesn't appear to (it's not quite the same as the Comets...there's a seperate, distinct lever on the Comet trans, but on this one, it appears to be part of the shifter...but if I move either part of it, the whole shifter moves... you'll see from the pics,)

Also, I've read Old guy discussing servo types...so the big A on my Intermediate servo cover means it's a A type servo piston? Or is that some other indecipherable thing?

(First pic, close-up of the shifter / kickdown side)

    dang it

I meant to ask, how do I attach the passing gear to this trans?

And here's the pic of the servo cover, so is this an A servo or what? What type of servo would be good for firming up those 1-2 shifts?

There should be another lever for the kickdown. the shaft should be threaded for a nut and washer to hold the lever on, with an o-ring behind it. There are some different types too. The kickdown shaft has a lever on the end inside, that fits in the valve body and when the rod from the accellerator is pushed down, pushes on a valve that kicks the tranny into passing gear(simply put, 2nd gear). The A servo is a better one than the B, but to eliminate those sluggish shift points, the hydraulic pressure must be increased by installing springs and such in the valve body, using a shift kit or other mods available. None of these will do any good if the clutch packs and seals, etc. are not in good condition. The increased band pressure is not the only reason for using the larger piston servo's. How fast it releases is also critical to firmer shift points too.

Is'nt there two levers on that tranny in the picture? I see the main lever for changing gears then a small lever facing forwards. Is'nt that the kickdown lever? Smaller than what I remember though.

ok..i am asusming that this is an automoatic ...since R D and P are not in a manual..... well at least not labeled that

the reason that D is reverse, R is drive and P is second is that the lever rod going to the tranny is connected backwards or upside down or however you want to say it. and when you select the gear you want, it is opposite where it should be

its not that tranny that is bad....its the connector rod that is wrong.

if its a manual tranny...then i have no idea....all i know is that when i put my shifter in i made the same mistake....took it off and reattached it and it worked fine

    good luck

got that, but like I said, the tranny in the car now has the 2nd lever... this one doesn't seem to have it..could I just pull the lever off the 'old' trans (and while I'm overhauling the tranny pictured above) put it on that one?

Yea, I got a shift kit for it (as well as a rebuild kit!) and will be going through this sloooooooly over the next few weeks (as I don't really wanna **** it up... it'd kinda suck to do all that work, get up next to some ricer, goose it a little and grenade the trans.... :D

Yea, there's like 2 levers on that same shaft...and both just shift it. They're on the same shaft, it seems. I just wondered if the C4s had different kickdown arrangements or something. Like I said, the one in the car now has the kickdown lever on it, and it seems to move 'downward' only (I figure it's from the throttle rod off the carb pushing down on it, ) :D
