I'm trying to locate a rebuild and was wondering...what's the difference between a C4 with the dipstick in pan or dipstick in case? Just want to make sure I go with the heavier duty for the 302...TIA. Ryan
C4 The pan fill C4 is usually out of truck, the major diff in the two is the number of clutches inside and also the size of the servo, depending on what it came out of and what engine size. Sometimes there is a diff in the splines on the input shaft, some were 26 and some 24, the 26 is a bit larger diameter but the torque converter must also match the spline count and bolt pattern. See if you can find a trans with PEE or PEF code on the tag attached to the servo cover near the tailshaft, these usually have 5 disc foward clutches instead of 4. Also look for a H or R stamped servo, they have a larger inside piston bore for better band clamping etc. You can change these between any case if need be. Also make sure you have the same size bell housing to match your flex plate size(there are two diff ones). The pan fill ones are hard to find dipstick tubes for, most get mashed when scrapped out. Also the bell housing usually bolts to the case instead of the front pump. Some say these are better?? If you do find one or two, I need one for a spare, tube and dipstick. Good luck
C4 TRANS my trans is from a 78 Granda C4 it is the pan fill type 26 spline input shaft , I too had alot of trouble finding a dipstick tube, no parts places here used or new had one or could get them. I did find one at "MARTELLS SALVAGE INC." in Wishek ND, the phone #(701)452-2339...mine cost me 10 bucks, and the 85 mile drive to get it, we were talkin, and I was telling him how much trouble I was having finding them ,he was really surprised, evidentially he has quite a few of them, maybe they would ship ya one not really sure of there policies....hope this helps!!
Dipstick in the pan is 70-81 they are the most popular c-4s.the older ones pre 70 have a deferent converter size.and input shafts can be different also i prefer 70-81 c-4s but all have opinions.just my 2 cents
