I have the motor in and bolted to the trans....with the torque converter in place. I put one nut on the converter and tried to rotate the crank with no sucess. so I hooked up my starter and tride to move it that way....no luck.......is something stuck or what could it be.
What flywheel did you put on? It must be the 157 tooth small wheel. Is the starter jammed up? Its work but need to look at these areas to find the problem.
Are you sure the converter was properly installed. I have seen many transmissions ruined because the converter is not properly seated. If you take the nut off of the converter stud the converter studs (and the converter) should "wiggle" back and forth in the holes of the flex plate. This movement should be possible with very little pressure from your finger. If it doesn't move then I would check to see if the converter is seated by loosening the tranny to block bolts and see if that allows the converter to move. If so, you need to get the converter seated properly by rotating it back and forth until it "inserts" into the tranny another "notch" so to speak. This will require that you separate the block and tranny enough to free the converter studs from the flex plate. BTW, did you have any trouble bolting the tranny to the motor in the first place? If so, this is likely the problem. Good luck
I assume the engine rotated ok prior to converter and trans installation. If so the converter is probably the problem as EFI said. Did you use the spacer plate between the block and and bell housing? There are two different size bells on c4's large and small, using 157 tooth flexplatel on large one will cause starter to not engage teeth, large flexplate, 163 tooth(I think) will not let starter to be bolted into the bell. I think you will find the converter at fault as stated in previous post, but also check all other rotating parts as before. Did see one that the flexplate attaching bolts were extending to far into the crankshaft and would contact the block which stopped all rotation of engine. One other sugesstion is to not try and use the starter to find the problem, remove plugs and place a socket and good size 1/2in ratchet on harmonic balancer bolt. Have one person slowly rotate if possible, and another look at flexlate and related items to determine problem. Don't forget to remove ratchet and socket afterwards, will wreak havoc with stuff when engine does fire up(been there, done that).
During my afternoon nap, I had a vision, one day back in time I installed a similiar engine and tranny. The converter had a drain plug in it and it stuck out so far that it caught on the block and interupted the rotation of said engine. Have a look see at yours also. Ground it off a little and that was that. Sleep does wonders to jog my old memory.
thanks I think it is the converter too....I just dont see how. Every thing bolted up alright. the drain in the converter is where it should be and I'm using the 157 tooth with the smaller bell. I'll just heve to pull the sucker back out. I know the converter was on the splines when I started however baby not far enough.
