I reached out and tried to make contact with him on an email address that was given to me when he rebuilt my transmission and got no response, I believe Scooper lives in the area and has met Paul before and tried to contact him with no luck also. He had a bad back along with some other issues, his knowledge will be greatly missed.

    Will not shift third.
I have a 73 Grabber. My first vintage/ Carburetor car. I have a slew of minor problems with the thing. But recently the car stopped shifting to third. It may have never shifted. I swear it did. But I recently put a Tach in to verify. I know very little of C4s.

I recently replaced the fluid and filter in the C4.

#1: Whenever I put it in gear it takes a few moments to actually get in gear. Doesn’t matter if its the first fire up or later in the day. It always takes a few moments for it to actually engage. I assume its building pressure to do this.

#2: When in “D” it will shift from 1-2 at 15 mph inter normal acceleration. It will not shift into 3rd. I will be at 55-65 mph and at like 2k to 2.5k rpms and I don’t see it shift.

#3: if I manually shift start at “1” it will drive in “1”. When I go to shift it into “2” it doesn’t shift. When I shift it from “2” (which is still in 1st gear) to “D” it will shift into 2nd gear but again at 35-40 mph it still will not get to 3rd.

#4: It will randomly slip out of gear. At low rpms or at a stop, especially if it’s hot. It’s like it’s in neutral. It happens randomly and not often. If I roll it to “1” it usually catches and then I put it back in drive.

#5: I checked the vacuum lines. Seems fine to me. I would like to hook up my vacuum gage to check. I tried hooking my vacuum gage to adjust my carburetor but every port i plugged into gave me a zero reading. Either I don’t know what I’m dong (which I don’t) or I have a serious vacuum leak.

#6: Kick down leaver springs back into place, i assume its still good.

Please help me out!!! It’s driving me nuts! I live in North San Diego County, if anyone lives in or near, I really could use a mentor. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it's skipping from 1st to 3rd, common problem, possibly has a broken intermediate band. If it has no gear when in the 2nd position, that's what's missing. RPM for 2nd will be much higher than what you are listing.
